Trying out the Ice Dub Caddis for the Jam in December.

Joy's suggestion was to tie something that the bench time could be shared with Children and Grand-children, so I did a little thinking and looking and settled on this one.

Not complicated and colorful, enough of a mix of components to keep the younger ones interested and shouldn't take long to tie.

It's a great feeling when, after all the time that has passed that the Grand-children were last here to visit, that they still ask about coming to tie flies or go out on the boat to fish.

Size 14 Allen hook, 2.4 mm nickel black bead, peacock black and chartreuse ice dubbing, copper wire for the ribbing.

First effort and I think I cut the body a little short. Will add just a bit more length on the next ties.

Glad you'll be tying Dave! As someone once said to some newbies,: Welcome to the jungle!

I love that ice dub caddis. Do you tie it any other colors?

That was actually the second one I've tied. So the answer would be no.

Where I found it did show examples of other colors and I already was looking at what dubbing I had and thinking of different combinations. I suspect an orange and red combination would work well.

Gee, where have I heard that before? :)

Thanks, JT. Hopefully I won't make a hash of it.

Way to go Dave!

That puppy will hunt for sure.

I agree with your observation of taking the body a bit further down the bend of the hook.

And now for the good things:

Ribbing looks very good.
Spikey look is great.
Well matched bead to hook size.
Body doesn't close off the hook gap, which is a common mistake made on this type of fly.
No visible thread wraps behind bead - impressive!

What the heck are you so nervous about in tying a demo at the Tying Jam? That's a lot of good technique on display right there!

Already restocking for next year. Finally got a new camera.

@whheff - I thought at first that that bottom fly was a dry fly, but then I realized that the tails looked like rubber legs. Very strange. Does the pattern have a name?
