Why is there a wing case on a dry fly?

davie mcphail didnt mention why it has a wing case and i cant add more

Turkey biot body baetis...try to go small today

My first attempts at wiggle nymphs. They look neat but don't know if they will fish any better than regular style.
I've spent time tying up fly's like that. I found conventional fly's work as good or better...and "conventional" fly's are far easier to tie.

But that's my experience. Your milage may vary.

Hornberg

Originated by Frank Hornberg in the 1920's

Hook - Mustad 9671
Thread - Black
Body - Flat silver tinsel
Underwing - Yellow calf tail, tied so as to tilt slightly upward
*Overwing - 2 mallard flank feathers, 1 each side
Cheeks - Jungle cock eyes, 2nd eye showing
Hackle - Grizzly and brown mixed - tied as a dry fly collar

* I have 2 gallon bags of teal feathers to use up. My drastically poor supply of mallard flank just couldn't do it

Wow, authentic Jungle Cock. Very nice. I only use my limited supply for streamers I plan on displaying.

Inquiring minds need to know. Especially so since it's a dry fly and very unlikely the trout can see the wing case on top.

Nfrechets flies are works of art not for actual fishing.
I may not be on his level of expertise but once in awhile I tie something so nice that I won't fish it.

Hi Normand Fréchette, I have to be honest this is the way it was done in the book I read and I have done it like this since, I just like tying it this way though when I have tyed it on the smaller sizes I just wound the body up as normal.. All the very best Davie..
