I'm working up some classic streamer flies for mounting shadow box style for an upcoming art show.

Since I mount my flies on mat board, I'll start by tying a heavy wire post against the shank of the hook, which protrudes out perpendicular to the shank. I'll then build up a base of thread and seal it with a varnish (as can be seen in the upper pic).

The fly is then tied in traditional manner, in this case a Grey Ghost, working carefully around the wire.

When the fly is ready to mount, I'll put a clear bead on the wire and secure it with some Superglue to serve as a spacer. The wire is then pushed into the mat board and secured with epoxy.

I learned this pattern last spring in a tying class sponsored by my salt water fly fishing club. I've tweaked it a little bit, enlarging the open gill
slits. I'm headed up to Northern Ontario in late June. Hope that the smallies and pike take a liking to it.

JerryC: Cool flies! Could you please share your gluing technique.

I'm using super glue to hold the edges together.
On these two I have a rattle wrapped on the bottom of the hook. I coat the bottom and sides of the rattle with a light coat of super glue and the head portion is slid on and held in place till the glue sets. I also coated the top and sides of the hook and rattle with UV resin. Tie on the tail material, coat one side(inside) with light coat of super glue, fold the body over the tail material and hook shank. I trim it to shape, color the body with permanent markers, add eyes and coat with UV resin. It's a variation a Yasaku style Crease Fly. I just made the gill openings larger

Here's the template and the head portion glued.

Nfrechet,

Interesting tie of a nymph you have there. Wing case looks great. I "need" to tie up a few of these and see how effective they could be.

Thanks for your post!!

I've been seeing these hollow flies tied up a bit. I found this pic (below) just today. Interesting design. Let us know how the hollow flies fish.
