The Spotburning Thread

Since we are all enthralled with the Spot Burning Thread maybe its time to get some spot burning threads! I suggest that effective immediately everyone declare a side on the spot burning issue and identify themselves on the stream as Pro-Spot Burning or Anti-Spot Burning via a t-shirt or vest patch (to be purchased through the forum of course). Some basic suggested designs are attached but I am sure with the creative minds on this site there could be far better ones!

Also, I can't believe Bells Mill was outed, an entire generation of suckers might now be lost! The horror......

Is this considered hijacking the thread by the way?

Opening day,1963, Bells Mill Road. I'm on the chestnut hill side a guy with a boat rod and a Penn Squidder on the other side winds up, casts and as his reel bird nests the line snaps and a three ounce pyramid sinker misses me by inches and actually stuck in a tree behind me. Let's keep that spot to ourselves.

Roger that! Make sure that we don't mention the covered bridge or any of the secret waters in Flourtown across from the Philadelphia Cricket Club...

I'm more anti-spoonfeeding.

Yes, it's a treasure all eight. Storms tore it up last year. First trout, first trout on a fly, last walk with my old brown dog all along the wissy.

I've been "intimidated," not "intimated." Sorry for the faux pas.

We don't judge 😉

I'm pro spot burning to a point. I feel that PA is a state rich with fishing opportunities, and it is a shame that only a few are well known, which concentrates the fishermen and ultimately is detrimental to our sport. I believe it's a crime that half the fly fishermen in central PA, for instance, believe that the only good streams around are Spring Creek, Penns Creek, BFC, and the LJR, when there are well over 100 excellent trout streams in their county. Same goes for every other area of the state.

That said, if a particular spot is particularly fragile for one reason or another, it should not be subject to burning.

And also, I value friendships more than my stance on this. Streams I find are fair game. Streams somebody else shows me, though, I will defer to their wishes.

Maybe you don't. ;-) Sounds personal, Rich. :-D

That's fair!

I'm selfish and I like to fish the really good streams. Problem is, those are the ones everyone thinks it is AOK to write about. I like to see anglers spread out a little. Then when I go to the famous crowded streams, they are less crowded. I have documented this phenomenon. You'll just have to take my word for it.

Its more than just fair - coupled with midnightangler's comment about damage caused by drilling and pollution, etc., its probably the most important concept in this thread.

1) Whether pro or anti spot-burning, the point appears to be lost on some that its most important to work to protect the water quality of a trout stream; otherwise, it will cease to be a trout stream and then there's nothing to "burn".

2) I've only knowingly encountered board members twice; 1) once two years ago during the Erie Jam, somewhat embarrassingly enough while fishing with my noodle rod and spinning reel; Squaretail recognized me, but in my defense, I like to think I was just adapting tackle to conditions and I did catch 7 that day, when most took the skunk 🙂 and 2) Stocktoberfest this past year. While catching fish is important to me, relationships with people are far more valuable. Who knows; maybe someday when I can't fish anymore, I'll be locked up in an old folks home with a board member. While I still remain mostly a fishing loner, I do hope to meet up with a number of board members I've never met and spend some time on a stream together with them this year.

We're a whole lot more the same than we are different; however, it seems that in our differences, perceptions are multiplied and magnified, sensitivities are heightened and over-enhanced, and we lose sight of the many ways we are the same (insert pro/anti spot-burn into equation, or even flyfishing/baitfishing; the argument still holds).

as someone who believes spot burning is real, has cried about it, and did so because I cared about the stream (landowners getting upset with increased traffic and litter), I now fully support the overutiulization of MY streams. I say so because, well, this happens.... good thing I got there to meet those landowners before so though or I wouldn't have the oppurtunity to fish these sections.

3 streams in this state are all I care about in terms of this issue and it's a matter of being on public, yet public because of landowners letting it be. thankfully, one of those streams has actually never been mentioned on this site.

And you don't even know who to thank, do you?

This is becoming a big problem with every fishing site in cyberspace.
Nobody wants to post a fishing report anymore, and who can blame them? They don't get paid for doing so. They have to purchase a camera and take the time to take the pix, and the time and trouble to put on photobucket and post here.
Then you have half the folks complain about spot burning or how you handle the fish during the pic.
It doesn't look good for the future! And with no reports with pix, all we can talk about is how to tie a knot or tie the same stinkin' flies!
I've sold a couple things on the "swap" forum, and the "Jams" look pretty good...... I'll try real hard to make the next one!
I'll try to post more reports with pix, if everybody else does! A new start to make PAFF the best on the internet?
And spot burning? really? the bait boys and the illegals and the pollution are messing up the trout streams....... not the fly guys! The "trashing bait chuckers" don't read the fishing reports on this site!!?? LOL
The God's honest truth..... every single fly fisherman I've ever met on any of the streams here in central PA was a pleasure to talk to, nature loving, no trash people!!
I can actually say that I like to see some fly fishing, seasoned, good tackle, educated, polite folks in the streams I fish!
Everybody is C&R now! I've never had a problem catchin' trout in any of these PA streams.
