I was admiring a picture of a very realistic emerger that someone had posted and it got me started. It was not exactly a guide fly, more for show. I have been trying to bridge the gap, real enough and yet something a fish can chew on without my remorse. This is my latest attempt. A "Last Chance Cripple" variant with a biot wrapped around the moose hair butts.

Tail: CDL w/Zelon
Abdomen: moose hair fibers
Emerging body: olive turkey biot wrapped around the moose hair butts
Thorax: Hair Tron dubbing
Wing: gray deer hair tied Last Chance Cripple style
Hackle: grizzly

Note: UV or Head Cement on moose hair and biot

Tight lines!

Pontoon-Hopper-800.jpg

i found a photo in mike valla's book "the founding flies" and decided to tie one up.

it is attributed to Charlie Craighead and tweaked by bill bennett and was popularized by vince marinaro

i google searched for more historical info but there is very little out there on the web

it certainly is not a very durable fly and i doubt that it would survive to catch a second fish

pontoon hopper

hook - dry fly style
thread - color to match
body - short segment from the end of a feather quill - dyed or colored wirh a marker
legs - biots

My friend's uncle used to tie that fly, although unique I cant recall him ever catching anything on it. I also recall him mentioning Marinaro. Perhaps it is in his book. I gave that book away back in February or I would check.

I believe he used a goose quill dyed green, and knotted pheasant tail fibers for legs

I like my streamers and nymphs to swim or drift hook upward and weight most of them to create this effect.

Here's my preferred pattern for imitating shad, peanut bunker, or any generic flat sided baitfish. The fly has a keel with a tungsten bead that keeps the fly swimming upright.

I was in the process of doing an inventory of flies I tied but had not bagged and tagged them yet when I came across these flies. I tied these flies sometime between late 2019 and the present.
I honestly don't remember which of the many books I have on salmon & steelhead flies they came from or if i found them on a website on the world wide web.
It must have been a senior moment or CRS (can't remember ****) syndrome.
