Nice. Trouty treats!

Those of you who know me know I love tying and fishing classic Catskill patterns. A lot of guys have trouble with the wings, and I've been trying to come up with an easy introductory method of winging to keep beginners from getting discouraged. I've been playing with turkey biots as a winging material and think this is what I've been looking for! If I remember correctly, this method is attributed to Rene Harrop, but I don't have a reference. The biots are sturdy, easy to work with, yet soft and flexible. Really a surprisingly ideal solution. This is a fleet of #12 and #14s with a lone #26 thrown in for fun.

FT, do you tie them in, then cut to size? They look really cool.

That is a pretty neat idea Mike. Do you tie the biots in by the tip? If so, I think they would be easy to adjust for height by just trimming them a bit.
Thanks for sharing.

Nice fly Sandfly! Is that a wool body?
Bill and Tyger, I'll be tying the biot wing dun at the jam on Saturday. The way I do it is to take one biot each from a matched pair of feathers and align the butts making sure the notch faces the rear of the fly. I then trim the butts to a wing-like shape. I measure against the hook and then tie in the tip end. The wings practically post themselves! You could try trimming after, but personally I think that would be more trouble than its worth.
Mike.

The Micky Finn. This fly was the first hairwing flys I learned to tie. It is a very old pattern. It is fairly easy to tie. There are many variations.
The original pattern had a body of flat silver tinsel ribbed with oval silver. The one I am showing here has a body of embossed metal silver tinsel, ribbed with oval gold. It is a killer smallmouth fly. Pickerel like it as well. An old friend of my Dad's tied it in very small sizes. Size 12 and even 14's. He cought tons of trout with them. Great early season pattern and just fun to tie.

Yeah, that's a fish catcher GC. I have no idea what it imitates but I always carry some in my box.

Nice tie on the Mickey Finn, Mike. I have always enjoyed the simplicity, the long history and the fish catching ability of that pattern. I really like to tie them on size 12 hooks for native brookies. There is just something special about catching a wild brook trout on a Mickey Finn.

I tied up a couple of these this evening. It's called the Metallic Caddis. The bead, wire body and slim profile gets it down into the water column real quick. They have produced well for me over the past few years in late winter/early spring. These are size 16 with Brassie size Chartruese Ultra Wire for the body.
