Top 10 Trout Streams in PA (only name brands)

I'm in on tripe, my mother-in-law used to get it for me all the time although I haven't had it in years.

The stuffed pig stomach is definitely on my short list but I can't let my wife see me eat it or know that I did. I'm probably going to have it out at Deitsch Eck in Lenhartsville...

As it is, she almost makes me eat my sardines the the basement...
Yeah, I tried to get her to stop there already for hogmaw. No dice! What can I tell ya, she grew up in North Jersey!

What i like most about heart is that it cooks firm without being tough. I once made a tarragon cream sauce for heart that clinched it.

Realized I missed the pickling aspect. I would think that would be good but have not tried that.

How about liver and onions, I can't be the only fan of them over mashed potatos, or buttered noodles.

I love liver in all forms with dredged & sauteed chicken livers at the top of the heap. They were my mother & my special treat as a kid. To this day, I never buy a whole chicken without cooking up the liver & heart. As a matter of fact, I am making a batch of chicken livers for my farmer buddy's 88 year old mom for their annual party in a few weeks.

I also love calves liver & onions. When I lived in NYC at least once a week I used to eat at this little old Hungarian restaurant that served a liver & onion lunch to beat the band.

Other liver favorites are live pate, liverwurst or smoked Braunschweiger with mustard on rye with a thick slice of sweet onion and I am crazy about foie gras (sorry PITA).

Sign me up for sweetbreads too!!

and of course Tastykakes.
What happened to them? I remember them (as a 1960 kid) being soooo good. Now I can barely eat them.

No one mentioned Lebanon bologna and peanut butter sandwiches. They were always a thing in LEPNUN County. Try it. You'll love it.

You're killing me with the liver. Huge fan of all forms including liverwurst. BUT organ meat is a HUGE no-no for gout sufferers so I have it very, very sparingly, like when I snipe the turkey liver at thanksgiving (heart too) or when I make a roast chicken. They get taken and sauteed separately for the cooks consumption 🙂.

Lebanon Bologna is like bacon, it works with anything!!

Peanut butter too... 😉

Even though I consider 50 - 60 year old food taste recollections unreliable, I haven't had a Tastykake in decades but the consensus is in 2025, they suck.
Other than being ridiculously over priced like a lot of things, and sometimes not being very fresh, they're okay. I definately don't buy them like I used to. They'll always be a Philly staple though.

I still remember when the chocolate cupcakes and Peanut Butter "Tandy Takes" (the original name when I was a kid) came in a three pack and the wrapper was waxed paper...

Which leads me to believe the wax enhanced the flavor. 😉

My Philly area fraternity brothers used to rail about not being able to get TastyKakes in North Jersey, most deli's only carried Hostess. I haven't had either in so long that I don't even bother, I don't want to taint the memories.

Anyone remember "Wacky Packages" trading cards?

Back when I was a kid when they first appeared, their spoof of Hostess Cupcakes was "Hostage Cupcakes, the Food Kidnappers Give Their Victims..."

I never forgot that one... 😆

There were also Drakes fruit pies that were deep fried and had an icing glaze on them. The Ohio Amish country’s “fry pies” remind me of them. Not a big fan of them.
A TastyKake lemon pie was always a traditional item for opening day of deer season packed lunch. Peanut Butter Tandy Takes were a treat in our packed school lunches.

I agree. They were almost always fresh back then too. I think they just sit longer in stores before being sold and replaced with fresh stock.
I wonder if they still make Coconut Juniors? I used to love those, and the chocolate eclair pies.

Regards,

Tim Murphy 🙂
