Top 10 Trout Streams in PA (only name brands)

Well, I don't know if you can buy them already pickled. I come from a big family (Mom was 1 of 10 kids) and we have large family holiday get-togethers numerous times throughout the years for holidays. I can almost guarantee that my one cousin will bring a pickled beef heart to our Easter get-together. She gets them raw at our local meat market, and she does the pickling herself.
Oh, damn! I misread your initial post. That complicates matters.

I'm sure I could find a recipe to pickle my own, but I'd much prefer to first try it from someone who knows that they're after. Maybe I can investigate local possibilities.

If you are into pies and ever fish the Perkiomen Creek near Pennsburg, stop at the Strawberry Restaurant on Rt 663. All pies are homemade on the premises and are really good. My favorites are the berry pies.
Geez, wish you didn’t mention it. Next time I go there, there will be a 45 minute wait. Once I wait, pies will be sold out. “No pie for you”

On second thought, there are thousands of places that sell pies. I will find a new favorite. If not, there are other sweet treats. Maybe Tasty Cake? I will be thankful for being able to eat those pies for awhile and happy for those who now can enjoy them.

I'm very curious.

My only beef heart experience was at a restaurant serving it pastramied, so I'm assuming it was brined / headed in the pickled direction. It was a little boring, though (mostly because the restaurant kinda sucks, I think).

I'll have to keep an eye out for meat market picked hearts.
Have you all eaten cow tongue?

When I was a kid we ate tongue sometimes, in sandwiches.

I haven't eaten that or seen it for sale for a long time. There are probably still butcher shops that sell it though.

Dear troutbert,

I had tacos de lengua many years ago in a Mexican restaurant in Phoenix AZ. I kind of ordered them on a dare but found out I really liked them. I also had menudo which was my only experience with tripe. That was good too, but I'm kind of a hog. 😉

Tim Murphy 🙂

Yeah, as mentioned above, I get lengua tacos frequently. I've yet to find a protein I'd reject on a taco.

I've also had some Jewish deli style tongue sandwiches. The one that stands out in my mind, though, was one of the massive novelty sandwiches from Famous 4th Street in Philly, and it was dry as hell. Didn't do the tongue justice.

My mother still tells stories about how when she was a kid she would burst into tears when my Ohio farm country grandmother would set a whole tongue down in the middle of the dinner table 😂 I guess Grandma learned to censor the menu at some point, though, as I mostly remember her for her pot roast.

One of my favorite sandwiches at Katz's Deli in NYC along with pastrami or corned beef is a tongue sandwich on rye or a turkey & tongue club on rye... Yum!!

I also used to eat at this great but long gone restaurant on 9th Street in Stroud Township called the "Beaver House" who listed "pickled tongue chunks" on the menu as an appetizer.

They had a fantastic 4 course prime rib dinner special that was incredibly reasonable. The wife and I (before she was my wife) would go there often for prime rib and much to her chagrin, I would get the tongue chunks as the appetizer course. 😛

Anyone remember the Beaver House?

Reubens...? Do you want to derail this thread. 😁😁

They are delicious as are Rachel's. Dunderbaks in Lehigh valley mall has some excellent deli sandwiches

I think this thread might have the record for the most derailed of all time. Guys, it's up to 34 pages and 672 posts! Kinda hilarious.

Make that 674.
Dear KeviR,

Not to get too far off the subject, but 20 plus years ago on the old VFS forum hosted by Fly Fisherman magazine someone started a thread called the "Thread Killer" thread and claimed he could stop any thread dead cold in its tracks. It went on until the message board folded and had many thousands of responses.

Tim Murphy 🙂

I like Reuben’s.

But my favorite deli sandwich is a classic hot pastrami on rye with lots of spicy mustard. Have even done them stream side on my backpacking stove.

Is Mike's mustard really amazing?

Mustard for me is kinda like coffee, or beer. My tastes kinda move around. And come back around. Right now Mike’s is my go to. Decent, but still mainstream enough bite, and it’s a little sweet. But just a little. Feel like most of the ones out there are pretty sweet, with the heat. Mike’s is closer to a spicy deli mustard.

Sometimes I get on a Dijon kick for a couple bottles. Sometimes I like plain regular yellow with jalapeños diced up in it. Generally, I don’t like my mustards sweet…Unless you take plain only yellow, warm it up, and dissolve some brown sugar into it. Try it, if you haven’t.
