No One Screaming...

Fellow Brethren...We need to follow the example that Ohio has implemented: https://ohiodnr.gov/buy-and-apply/hunting-fishing-boating/fishing-resources/fishing-lotteries
Jesus christ, i’ve joked about it but people actually enter that and do it. Like bagging your first buck my going to a petting zoo, smearing molasses on the end of a double barrel 12 gauge and when the deer starts licking it making a jackson pollock with its brains on the wall behind it

Not so much the water temperatures…yet. It’s the fact the water in most streams is just so darn low.
And I think the fear that things could go downhill very quickly.

These have been the conditions on Penns in the last few years that have been the setting in which brook trout have made somewhat of a comeback anecdotally among the cabin owners. When water temperatures are not insanely hot but there is very low water, I often wonder if fish that have been forced to become headwater specialists(brook trout) do better. I have not seen this studied and would be interested to see what low water’s effect had on inter species competition. Presence data from drift-less suggest larger brown trout really prefer deeper water, gotta imagine that deep habitat/bankside overhead cover reduced in drought but just something i am wondering i have nothing objective to say either way on low water and competition, it usually comes with warmer water too but not always from a focal spatial perspective with spring influence. .

When temps go up I move further up the stream and fish the smaller tribs. Usually fishing is very good. The wild brook trout are smaller but youll get a wild brown or two.

I'm fishing tomorrow evening if the temps are acceptable. Haven't caught and evening outing yet this year. If temps are good I'm fishing regardless of the water levels.

Please, everyone stay home! Fishing is terrible out there, what with all the optimum stream temps and those pesky swarms of bugs.

I fished a creek that was 200 CFS, when normal is 400, perhaps. You can't really tell someone a creek that is running 200 CFS and is below 60 degrees is a danger to the fish.

I think it's wise to have a plan B because there is no end in sight for this, but the end is not here yet.

But, again, please be cautious and stay home, especially on weekends!

I prefer fishing low water vs high water. The trout sit in more predictable locations IMO - had a 30 fish day on Saturday on a creek that was flowing at 98 CFS when average is around 175 CFS, water temps still in the mid-high 50s. I was fishing a thin mono rig and man it was on fire!
I thought you were a fly fisherman Schaefer

That just makes the angling more difficult and technical. You gotta be more stealthy.
you’re right. Requires extreme stealth to catch a fish out of a dry stream bed.

The limestoner I fished today was 56 degrees at 7 a.m.

Streams are low and we need rain, but there are still creeks at healthy temps with sections that flow. I'm on my second summer on the fly (30 or so on the spinner) and it's been awesome finally learning to get fish to rise to bugs, especially with low and clear, spooky water! Just trying to get them back in quickly. I'm not a photographer anyway so I say my goodbyes pretty fast. Getting ready to transition to warmwater species here soon.

Seriously? Maybe you know each other and you're ribbing, which is fine, but....

You do you, Shaefer. I have fly fished since I was 10 years old in every possible way, and I am now 54 and have really enjoyed learning to perfect my mono rig game over the last 4 or 5 years. It's just another tool. I catch fish because I can read water not watch for noses, you know?

Have fun, but don't wear flat brim hats, don't fish winter, don't fish summer, don't use a worm or an egg, don't drive a Tacoma, etc... I feel like some of the most vocal haters on here just envy your success and time on the water. If I fished 12 times a year during hatches and only with a guide on destination cricks, I guess I would be mad at the young bucks catching 30 fish when I've decided it was ethical to stay home because the 55 F limestoner happens to be low today...

You do you do, Shaefer. You throwing flies, probably barbless, and responsibly doing so? Carry on!

I'm not a euro nympher but man, it does seem like a way to hammer fish. I prefer small streams where euro nymphing is definitely not the most advantageous method of angling. Yesterday I was on a tiny stream just tossing a dry with a nymph dropper off of it and shooting it through small lanes in the vegetation. On bigger streams I've Tightlined using my fly line out of my rod tip, but never went mono rig. Maybe I'll try it. I feel I've more or less perfected indicator fishing. There is more to being really good at that tactic than most realize.

I've seen my large local limestoner being hit hard by euro guys. They seem to get popping up everywhere. Who was the guy with the blue Subaru covered in fly fishing stickers with a weird rack on top parked at the 3rd Street bridge? If you read this, you'll know where I mean. You parked beside my old rusty red Silverado. I bet that person is a forum member here.

I also have an old green mini van. Chrysler Town & Country. It's my "fishing buggy." It's got some fly fishing stickers on the back and a "PAFF" sticker. Some of you have seen that one before around, I'm sure.

You're crazy brother. The weenie is a true Pennsylvania classic. I fish it with pride
A few years back me and a buddy were fishing a small stream. Green worms were "raining" from the trees. We both tied on green weenie's but his had a red collar on. He caught 6 in a row.....I never got a hit.

Hence....my distain for the "weenie of the green"

Not too worried about wild fish survival, yet. But things are low and we could use some rain, I'd like more water in the creeks.

Some chances of showers this weekend, nothing major. Possibility of a soaker mid next week (wed or thurs). Kind of a noreaster deal, its not pop up storms, its a system, so a lot of rain or none probably, depending on the path of the low.

FYI, there is a FFing tournament this weekend on your "large local limestoner". I would guess the guys you saw were the Euro FFers practicing for their competition.
