Here are some recent ties, finally got some wire and tied my first tandem. First pic is the tandem 5/0 Buford. I'm getting better at spinning the deer hair. I can't wait to fish this big hunk.
This something new Im trying out. Tying tandems using a single rear hook. I just clip the front hook after tying and finishing the head.
Ive caught my last 6 toothies on this style, It makes handleing and unhooking them a lot easier. Ive had no missed hook ups so far. They seem to swim better with out that front hook acting as a keel.
This is the finished fly.
Fly looks good paco. I keep seeing the extended shank design...might need to give it a shot.
Would have never thought of that color combo either...but it looks good! Is that that bluish color tail I see in there?
I had to expand the musky box and finally got around to it the last couple nights (it should have taken a couple hrs, but I was lazy). Still wound up with a few that didn't fit. But Dilbert approved...
I had to bump this thread because I'm bored and I haven't been able to fish and I'm having Musky withdrawal! Tied up my first triple, two 5/0's and a 3/0 in the rear to help save some weight. Measured out at 13 inches..a big hunk of meat for big fall Muskies..if I can get out to chase em.
I am still looking for a source for closed cell foam to tie up Brad Bohen's Sponge Bob Square Head. I know some of the other more experienced guys on here have had success with it. If you browse this thread there is a good example of a balsa wood poppr as well. I have a couple other foam patterns I am looking to tie up, one is a bass pattern I am going to enlarge. I'll post them when I'm done. The guys over at flyobsession.com have some interesting top water prototype patterns. Kool blog too
I've used both wood and foam for topwater heads. Wood makes for chrisper action when poping. Wasps I makes closed cell foam blocks. Ya have to cut em with scraper blades. The also make cylinders but it's hard to get your fly to ride consistent. I've caught 4 pike on topwater and it's a tuff hook set.
Here is another to the Esox arsenal...I was going for more of black crappie profile and color. It's on a 6/0. I added some peacock herl in before my last clump if deer hair and a marabou collar I like those to additions well see how it does this late season and in the spring next year...I'm thinking dark days cold water conditions
Couldn't get out today so the next best thing. I decided to experiment with some foam head shapes. Here is the first it's like Bohen's spongebob square head pattern..I wanted a popper/slider so well see how this does in 2014.
Here are a couple more took a stab at the Swimming Jimmy. Stabbed myself a bunch times since this rides hook point up.. Lol curious to see how this moves in the water. The second is a Double Hangtime
Deadly. I tie, but haven't gotten into tying musky flies yet. I must be intimidated by all that material! :-D I really need a top water pattern as all my flies are sub-surface. I'll have to work on a blockhead this winter. I can't imagine a musky topwater take...
