I too fish a 16 most of the time - I prefer not to use tiny flies. However, I do carry some 22's, some with wings a la RS2, because sometimes the tiny stuff does work better.
Tom - this months Fly Fishing & Fly Tying (UK Version) has an article on 'micro metals' - no thread body, just one wire as body, the other as ribbing, epoxied with a bead #20-26 ;-)
red and black, and green and black.
they are on my list to tye - right after some Utah Killer Bugs.
Just tied up some Killers yesterday. The Jameson's oyster colored yarn was pretty tough for me to find, eventually found some on eBay for a decent price.
Thx. geebee. I don't go further than a 24. I can probably tie em but would never get em on the tippet. I've also tied them with a glass bead, a bit of zLon for a wing and sometimes with a smaller size wire for the rib. Don't know if the last one makes a difference to the fish.
By the way, that shetland spindrift oyster yarn can be purchased at Natural Stitches on Penn Avenue in Pittsburgh. It is in the plaza that Trader Joe's is in. Easy to find.
A large skein is $6. I have tied numerous flies with this and it is fine stuff including many sexy Walt's.
These yarn stores has many items fly tyers can use. That skein is huge- a lifetime supply.
