Breadcrust Nymph

Hook - Nymph style
Thread - black or brown
Body - Ruffed grouse tail
Hackle - Grizzly hen

That pattern is a blast from the past.

Below is a well tied Breadcrust Nymph image from Charlies Fly Box. It was one of the first flies I learned to tie and fish when I was teen growing up in NE PA.

I caught many fish with it, and I was an avid grouse hunter so the materials to tie it were virtually free. It is supposed to imitate a cased caddis, and when tied well (gnarly looking) it looks good to the fish.

Love the Breadcrust. A little tip I learned from an old friend, now passed, is to soak the split Grouse tail feather in hair conditioner. It really softens them up and they are not quite as brittle when wrapping. He swore by them and tied them by the dozens.

Guess I gotta go soak me some grouse tail.

The Breadcrust is a fly that is very near and dear to my heart. I learned to tie this fly many years ago. In fact a few years ago I tied this fly for the PAFF tying jam. Every Winter I tie a pile of these. Its still a great fish catcher.

@Nfrechet amazing looking!!!

@hopback that's a nice caddis.

Hopback. I do well with the Holy Grail. My version is similar to the one found on the Orvis site--tan hare mask body, gold bead and a red thread head. https://news.orvis.com/fly-fishing/video-tie-holy-grail-caddis-emerger

Shakey -

Ever tie or fish a Shakey Bealy?

That’s what I was just tying. It’s a great fly for big fall run browns in the Madison in MT. I’d like to try it (or with a slight variation) this year in PA too.
