Steelhead Thread 2014-2015

I've never fished Erie, only Lake Superior.

I have always wnted to fish Elk Creek in the snow though - that TV show with Mike Pawlawski was awesomeness, but the 6hr drive is too far for me in SEPA for a weekend, and if i go for a longer trip i might as well go to up to Superior or out west for the wild steelhead...

i'll get there oneday though.

sandfly - you are correct, there are no Steelhead west of Oak Orchard Creek. Besides a maybe couple strays in the Niagara River, but everyone knows you can't fly fish there.

Have fun at the OOFS glass clave. Maybe some of the guys there have fished for steelhead before...

you are fishing the wrong Erie tribs...

The best steelhead fishing in NYS is within 40 mins from the PA line. I live 40 mins from the SR and would rather drive 2-3hrs west than make the 40 min drive north.

You let me know where that is and I'll let you know whether I think it's better or not.

Ive had the itch for a couple weeks now, especially since it's been fall like around here basically all summer, lol. A guy I know said he saw a couple in Walnut creek (NWPA) last weekend. They were only in up to the first pool but non the less they were in there.

This time of year, they will often make "exploratory" runs but return to the lake quickly. These fish often come in at night but do not stay in the stream until the temp and flows are to their liking. It's always fun to get a first glimpse of them, though... Not too far off!

$250 for a day is cheap. You can always just peg a bead if you any to fish egg patterns which I would highly recommend that time of year. Also some small black stones would be in my box as well. No need for a ton of split shot depending on the water level.

just came back from a fiberglass get together and scouting out some steel head spots for this year.. water is low where we were but had a good look at some nice runs and holes.

That's a slab Nello! I can't wait either. DSR has seen a few kings on the run. Only a matter of time before the steel starts!

is it too early to start an erie raindance thread?

I've been doing rain dances for over a month now :)

A little snow storm wouldn't hurt either...

You guys are killing me.

I live about 45 minutes from Elk Creek and can tell you there has been no shortage of rain.

Stop with the dancing already.

PLEASE!

You should make the 45 minute drive then and catch all of those steelhead in that high flowing stream ( from the excess of rain). :-D

I was up yesterday fishing the shorelines around the mouths of the creeks. Fish are most certainly around and ready to start moving in. Saw a few fish at the mouth of Elk in the frog water. Same deal with the Nut along the wall. Reportsbof a few in the 1st hole. Fish have been moving in and out of the lower Miles as they have been able to as well with a few scattered reported catches here and there.

The good news is that the cool summer has the temps of the lower Elk at 67F as of yesterday. I was pleased with that temp. It's often much higher in early Sept.

Keep up the rain dances in reference to getting fish in the creeks! Soon, very soon!

I would enjoy that if it is feasible. BTW, I saw you mention it on the other thread and was thinking the same thing.

I was thinking the same thing, may do a weekend before the Jam, not sure when yet. Norm

Cool temps and showers in the forecast for most of next week.

We'll see. Last Sunday the weather service was predicting 1-2" of rain for the Erie area Monday night into Tuesday. Sadly, that turned into not one freakin' drop :-(

I'm anxious too! Soon, very soon!

Pulaski is going to hit the 40's sunday night.

the same guys who predicted the cool wet summer, predict a cold October and November and a snowy December.

I can sort of attest to that. When I left Cleveland on Tuesday, it was pouring out. Was also pouring when I got out near Chardon where I bought gas. I hit the Ashtabula County line and the roads were dry. Got home (near Pymatuning) and it had rained earlier, but not much. Enough that I didn't have to water the wife's plants out front.

From the house looking west, there were some of the strangest looking clouds. Very dark, and tapered to a point like a huge funnel. It passed to the south of the Erie PA watersheds.

But everything is still wet enough. please don't dance.
