Fly box for small flies recommendations

I’m a fan of C&F design because I use the universal system. However that’s based on micro slit foam. They do make large and medium cases with compartments that might work. They are more expensive than the other options but I do think the build quality is very good. You need a plastic lid that does not flex at all so the compartments are kept tight otherwise flies mix.

You could also just go the route of Pat Dorsey and cram 1000 size 24 flies into one inch of foam 😂
I want the c&f boxes that are half foam half compartment but the regular foam inserts that you have to purchase separately been unobtainum for awhile now. The boxes themselves are out there but few and far between.

Those look like exactly what I want. When you get home after a day of fishing are your flies all in the same hole they were when you started the day?
Yes, the magnet is strong enough that I’ve never had flies slip out of one compartment into another. I suppose it’s possible if you violently shake the box, but it’s not happened to me.

Almost free I get them nicotine pouch containers free add some foam and they fit nicely into a pocket just not very big

I fish down to size 32 so I've dealt with this for a long time.

A couple of things and a recommendation.

Avoid deep or non sloped compartments like the plague for tiny lies, they make it extremely difficult to extract a single fly.

Avoid magnetic attachments. With tiny flies, the hooks get magnetized easily and they will stick together also making it extremely difficult to extract a single fly.

As much as a I love and use Myran boxes, really small stuff like the thread & wire bodied midges I tie will migrate between compartments.

That being said, my tiniest flies are stuck in plain flat foam. In my case, either in flat foam sheets I made to put in my Richardson Box or in one of the small Wheatley Boxes I use for midges. The larger Wheatley Slimline Flat Foam Wheatley boxes are nice too.

The suggestion: Get a minigrabber and attach it to a zinger to pick up, tie on AND put back the small stuff. It makes life SO much easier and is better than using hemostats:

Update: I purchased the Tacky Original RiverMag box and took it for a test drive on the crick today. Nice box, well built and my flies didn’t move one bit. Shallow compartments make it easy to pull out small flies and I like the magnetic latch. My only complaint is that it is twice as thick as the old box I am replacing, but the old box sucked at its job so it is what it is.

Would recommend 100%.

Anyone had luck with these Umpqua boxes? I like the idea of having 1 medium sized box where I can take everything for the day. The Tacky box above would be nice if it was half magnetic and half foam.

At the risk of bringing on comments about having the strength of a 95 year old woman. . . I find the silicon Tacky boxes extremely durable and well made, but a bit heavy. . .

FWIW I have the Fulling Mill Tactical box (not the max) and the 1 layer Stealth box. They are the best foam boxes I’ve used and work well for smaller flies.

No magnets though, and I agree magnets are nice for very small flies.

I have the Tacky Original River Mag box. I lik e much better than the cheap slip mag box. I have a couple other Tacky boxes. I went into the closet yesterday and retrieved one. I saw that one magnet was missing and called Fishpond. They sent out some magnets the same day no charge.
