I have been looking at the section from Friendsville, md to around deep creek lake. Anyone have any experience fishing here, are there wild trout? Was thinking that browns may swim up this stretch of river to yough river lake in fall.

I've fished it quite a bit from where deep creek releases(by streams and dreams)down to sang run bridge. It is mostly stocked fish with some wild guys in the mix. Ive caught a couple bigger fish but never heard anyone say they are coming from the yough lake. The bug life is excellent but make sure you are aware of releases and watch out for water rising quickly. Here's a nice brown I took a couple years ago.

From what I remember reading (years ago), that section is a lot of heavy water and release can make it dangerous

That's the section below sang run bridge, it is heavily used by whitewater folks when there are releases from deep creek lake. When there is a release the upper yough put in lot will be loaded with vehicles. The area I fish is reasonably friendly to wading at appropriate flows.

Here is the deep creek generator release number: (508) 251-7704

It’s usually a short message saying when surf is up, and when the tide is out, so to speak.

I’ve long wondered if there was a Maryland steelhead run in that section of river (Friendsville to the lake) at this time of year.

I can attest to the existence of runs of single digits to tens of lake steelhead out of the Baltimore reservoir system, but it is so hit and miss that I only take a crack at it if I’m feeling really bored. And far too self confident.

My guess is that trout do get into that section of the river from the lake, but they are either very few and far between, or a well kept secret among some very adventurous anglers.

Please post in the reports thread if you go.

I have hunted and fished from Friendsville down to the lake an old friends father owned that whole hill yes there’s good trout fishing there and plenty of deer if you look on the map directly above friendsville is my old buddy’s Dads farm I know you acquired info for above that but below is good to lots of stocked holdovers I have friends on both sides of friendsville and they all fish it beware if you run into a still site they don’t take kindly to that lol

From friendsville upstream it’s a real possibility below probably not ,them are the craziest hillbillies I ever met they’d run from Kittanning to friendsville every night plow fields or bake hay till midnight 1:00 am and be back on time 6:30 am everyday they’d drink a 30 pack on the way home every night never missed a beat going out of friendsville toward Oakland immediately out of town there’s Ross lane to the left there family ran stills for ever probably not so much now I’d say but maybe one of them other hillbillies still does I would not get nervous about it seriously but it does take place down there , crazy guts we’re bringing a trailer load of hay up for mulch someone threw a cigarette out caught the trailer on fire they pulled over and unhooked it and came to work picked it back up that night on the way home they built the 2 sewage treatment plants in rural valley when we put city sewerage in the hole town in 2001 miss them crazy bas#%#%ds,

On the original topic, I’ve heard the same statement about fall run brown trout on the upper Yough from Garrett county residents and have seen decent fall browns there myself. Never got anything I’d call lake run myself but it’s always possible and worth a shot.

This time of year, from Confluence to Ohiopyle is your best bet. Browns and Rainbows the size you wouldnt believe. Dunbar has better stills.
