John, are you coloring your poppers with markers?

Hey Darby,

All of the color on my poppers is done with acrylic craft paints, any color imaginable can be created by mixing those paints. I then cure the whole head with a couple coats of uv epoxy and generally even set them out in direct sunlight to get that real solid final finish. They take a little time to make but they are fun to create and pretty darn durable.

Size 8 Foxee Redd Minnow. This pattern has really great movement in the water and with the crayfish type of color scheme it is an excellent carp pattern for those active feeders rooting in the mud.

Hm. Hare's Ear Sucking Squirmy? Full disclosure: it's an idea cribbed from a carp guy that was just on the Orvis podcast.

That's a big nymph on a size 12 streamer hook. I don't plan to upset the delicate sensibilites of a trout by showing it this fly. It's instead an experiment to get carp's attention in murky, low visibility.

I figure if the worm doesn't get takes, I can always pop it off and just use the nymph.

The yellow and red Cutthroat patterns are used frequently in the Puget Sound area. Although many were originally tied for sea-run cutthroat, some have been adapted for steelhead and are tied in larger sizes.
