Thread Spool Slice Poll

When using threads like UTC and SemperFli that come with spool slices, do you leave them on?

The dumbest poll you'll take all year:

A couple of manufacturers ship their thread spools with slices. UTC and Semperfli are two examples. Uni is an example of a thread manufacturer that doesn't.

Red thread is a Uni 8/0 (no slice). Wood Duck, Black, Purple are UTC's (colored slices left on the spools). Same with the Burnt Orange SemperFli 12/0 on the right.

For the longest time, when I'd spool up a new color, I'd always take the slice off, set it aside, and replace it when the thread went back on the rack.

After tying with threads that come with slices for a number of years now - maybe 5 or so (been a Uni guy for decades before that) - today for the very first time, I decided to leave the slices on. Guess what: It didn't make a difference.

Got me wondering what you do.

I remove them when they're in the bobbin holder. I'd never heard of them referred to as a "slice" before, but honestly this is the longest I've ever thought about them 😁

It took me a while, longer than I’d care to admit, to learn they were removable. I tie with UTC mostly. They come from the factory with a good number of winds around that cap. When I start a spool I pry the cap out and unwind the thread then put that cap right back on. It makes no difference in my Dr. slick bobbin holders.

Textreme thread is nice and it has caps that pop in and out and remain attached to the spool.

I thought this thread was about eating pizza while tying... 😉

Anyway, I use Gudebrod for 99% of my tying and they had the best spools with a "slice" built into the spool on both ends on the inside.

IF I have any stuff on spools with a cap, I leave it on.

i do have danville thread spools that have a "slice" on the rim of the spool and use it to insert the thread from unraveling when the spool is not in a bobbin holder
