The dumbest poll you'll take all year:
A couple of manufacturers ship their thread spools with slices. UTC and Semperfli are two examples. Uni is an example of a thread manufacturer that doesn't.

Red thread is a Uni 8/0 (no slice). Wood Duck, Black, Purple are UTC's (colored slices left on the spools). Same with the Burnt Orange SemperFli 12/0 on the right.
For the longest time, when I'd spool up a new color, I'd always take the slice off, set it aside, and replace it when the thread went back on the rack.
After tying with threads that come with slices for a number of years now - maybe 5 or so (been a Uni guy for decades before that) - today for the very first time, I decided to leave the slices on. Guess what: It didn't make a difference.
Got me wondering what you do.
