I recently scored some vintage fly fishing gear on Craigslist. I picked it up the other day not really knowing what any of it was. The seller wasnt the user of the gear, a family member was, so they really didnt provide much info. I wasnt really able to research what I was buying before I bought it.

Anywho, I thought I'd share some pictures of recent score.

I spent the evening tonight cleaning the reels up so I decided to snap a few quick pictures.

1. Pflueger Medalist 1498.

I have an old leather case with it thats marked 10wf. Im assuming the line on it is the 10w

From the info I was able to find, the reel is from the early 60s.

2. Pflueger Gem 2094.

The little bit of info I found dates this one to the late 40s/early 50s.

3. Pemco model 85

Couldnt find much info on this one. Its an interesting setup. I put some line on it to cast it just to see how it felt. Man, its super weird.

I also scored an old South Bend fiberglass rod. Most of the markings are missing on the rod. Its 2 piece. Its 9ft. I believe it goes with the Medalist 1498.

And lastly, this was in the box. Not fly related, but still cool -

Ocean City Xpert 80 from the mid 1940s.

I really like the Medalist reel. I think Im going to try to find either a 7w or 8w rod to match it to.

If any one has any info to add about any of these items, I would really appreciate it, especially the rod.

Cheers

Haha I was checking this post out for the bamboo rod! Glad someone got it that will use it, guess I was just to late

My fishing buddy in State College used an old Eagle Claw (Wright and McGill) 7 Weight with a Pfleuger Gem reel for years. It did the trick.

Thanks for sharing the photos of the old gear. Neat stuff! It definitely brings back memories for me. I still use a Pfleuger Medalist reel on a 7' 6" 5 wt outfit occasionally when I'm fishing some tight cover. My first outfit that I started flyfishing with over 35 years ago was an old Shakespeare Wonder Rod with a Pfleuger Gem reel on it. It was not the exact same model number as the one you got but very similar.

That 1498 is an earlier one, (six rivets), and appears to be in great shape. You did very well! Add me to the list of happy owners. Here is my 1495. I love this reel.

Thanks guys.

I havent really decided what I am going to do with any of this stuff yet.

I like the Gem. It cleaned up ok for what it started as. It feels smooth and well built but the right hand retrieve feels so odd. Im not sure if Id be able to get used to it.

As for the Medalist, it cleaned up super well. I just gave it the ol vinegar bath treatment. I would really like to used this reel for something. I was thinking of maybe matching it to either a 7w or 8w and using it for bass or maybe even going a bit heavier and using it as a steelhead rod.

I put it on the South Bend rod I picked up and it was like casting a telephone pole. Ive never really messed with fiberglass before so maybe thats how its supposed to feel compared to my Orvis 9' 5w.

As for the Pemco, its super awkward to used. Ill more than likely just set in on a shelf and look at it because its neat.

nice,
I'm going to a fiberglass get together this weekend near buffalo, lots of old click reels and old glass rods there. expecting over 100 rods alone. I have 15 rods going and close to 30 reels.
