Recent Rain

Thanks for the info.Tim. I’ll have to check out that place. I go out Lancaster way a few times a year. I do think what I paid is steep. Seems like most stands in my area are pricy $. and unfortunately the one about a mile from the house closed this year. They used a building on someone else’s property and the rent got raised. (Go figure )Peach’s are going for a buck a piece. It’s still a little early in Mont. / Bucks area for corn. The stands in my area bring it in from Lancaster.
Dear javelin389t,

Peaches are $ 3.00 a quart at the Corn Wagon. I paid $ 7.00 for 10 locally last Saturday. They have been very good the two times I bought them locally but $ .70 a piece is kind of salty. Here is the price list for the place.

Sweet Corn - $4.50/13 ears
Peaches - $3.00/quart
Green Bell Peppers - 3/$1.00
Eggplants - $1.00 each
Tomatoes - by the piece or quart
Cucumbers - 4/$3.00
Zucchini - priced by size
Sweet "Candy" Onions - $1.00 each
Cantaloupes - priced by size

Regards,

Tim Murphy :)

Philly area got pounded with storms. A tree came through my next door neighbor's roof. Has little kids too, but everyone is okay. More storms tonight.

They were very isolated over the weekend. I had very little rain on Sunday, but enough to get me out to chase some local smallmouths. Five miles away, the crick was blown out....

On the way home from work today I saw a sign for sweet corn for $4 per dozen. I'll have to stop there tomorrow.

Just a little rain here in Centre Cty this afternoon.

Dear troutbert,

Without trying to be too nosey care to share the town and closest road. That's a great price and me and the wife might want to take a drive on Saturday.

Here in York, we got wrecked yesterday. Sheer winds dropped a tree on every road for about 4 miles. I spent 2 hours with 2 other neighbors just trying to clear one lane up from my house. Whole woodline was toppled like dominos. Then today, we got sent home early from work as we were only being powered by a generator and thats not enough for what we do. So i spent 3 hours cutting up one tree in this blasted humid heat. I think i have about 5 weekends worth of work with my saw to do, plus im so behind on building my shed that im about ready to weep some tears. I just want to go fishing dang it.

Finally got a pretty good soaker here between 4 and 6pm.
Should help things out a bit

Rain also brought cooler air temps, that are supposed to last at least a few days.
Prolly be able to give AC a break for awhile

yikes! a dollar an ear. Even paying the "upcharge" for buying it in State college proper at the farmstead I think my wife pays about 0.30 or 0.35 an ear. If we wanted to go to belleville, gees, it might be 0.25 an ear.
correction. I asked her. Corn went up this year to 0.40 or 0.45 an ear in state college right now. Inflation.

It's on the road between Bellefonte and Zion. It's not a regular stand. It looks like just a regular house along the road and they've got some corn for sale.

Lots of corn popping up at that price between state college and wilpo. Seems cheaper than the past few years. I recall being happy with 5 bucks a dozen last year unless you were buying bulk. I just heard today of an amish farm selling 100ears for 32 bucks. Time to get some for the freezer

My old stomping grounds. Not sure who that would be selling corn though (I probably don't know them as I haven't lived there in nearly 40 years).

Regarding rain in northcentral PA, we're doing OK these days. I'm not encouraged to rush out and fish for trout, but I suspect that the streams are holding their own for this time of year and my lawn is fairly green, although not growing at the speed of light as it did in May and June. My orchard and berries look nice and this recent rain will help the apples and pears to size up some for sure.

My wife makes an incredible summer salad. Simple and tasty. Chunk a very ripe tomato. Chunk a cucumber. Slice in some red onion and half to one whole garlic. Toss in some shredded basil. Lightly dress with red wine vinegar, olive oil, salt and pepper. Let sit in the refrigerator for at least an hour. Go lightly on the salt so that you don’t bleed out the tomatoes. If too tart a little sugar goes a long way. Add some feta when serving if you want to add some protein.

Have her try a Candy Sweet onion in the salad sometime. They are grown locally (PA/NJ) and look like a yellow onion with a thick skin except they usually have a short portion of the stalk attached when harvested...

Super crunchy, sweet, less susceptible to bruising and IMHO 100 times better than a Vidalia or Mayan Sweet onion. Many supermarkets (Giant, Weis) offer them in season and they are VERY popular with farmers in Pennsylvaia because the state encourages their growth as a PA Preferred agricultural product.

Once the tomatoes are coming in earnest, my wife and I eat tomato salad almost every day with all the veggies from the farmer down the road. My salad includes tomatoes, sliced Kirby cucumbers, sliced yellow & green zucchini, Candy Sweet onions, fresh basil (free of charge to regular customers), and chunks of mozzarella cheese.

My dressing is a homemade balsamic vinaigrette I make with some really good balsamic vinegar, unfiltered extra virgin olive oil, French Dijon mustard, fresh garlic, brown sugar, salt & pepper.

BTW - If you want real deal feta and feta to die for, take a road trip Broomall, PA and stop at the Euro Market. Recommended varieties they sell include Dodoni Feta from Greece, Malincho Beta from Bulgaria (Feta is called Beta in Bulgaria and Malincho offers both sheep & goat's milk varieties) and Valbresso from of all places, France.

I can't even begin to describe all of the othe goodies they sell in addition to the cheese...

FWIW - According to my weather station we got 1.95" of rain and no drama (other than no Internet, cable TV or phone for 40 hours) on my property yesterday. ;)

Hey bamboozle. Curious how much for the corn your way ? I just paid .90 an ear last week. Came from local stand but they get it from lancaster. Thanks in advance.

$5.50 a dozen, white or bi-color from the farmer down the road...

What I do know about my farmer buddy is he picks by hand several times a day, only picking what he knows he'll sell that day and his fields are NOT adjacent to his farm stand or contiguous to each other which means he has to get in his truck and drive to a field to pick.

I don't know what about anyone thinks, but excluding the cost of seed and other expenses to grow that corn, selling it isn't exactly a huge money making proposition at any price...

back to rain. It completely missed the centre-Mifflin-Blair area . Dang!

Parts of Mifflin got rain. It poured, or so I am told, in Lewistown and I think Reedsville/Milroy got it. If what I heard through the grapevine is correct, it poured in Mt. Union for a bit, too. Near Mcveytown at my house, however, we got a few scattered drops, but not enough to make the dirt below the grass wet.

I am actually kind of mad about it. C'mon, Mother Nature!!!

Meh. This time of year you want to see purples and reds.

If I had today off, the Poconos would be my target somewhere prob. From watching the radar yesterday, I thought Cameron/Potter/Clinton got hit better than they did. Better than nothing I guess.

Edit: But to illustrate how much water it takes to move the needle in any significant way at this time of year, Kettle went from just under 30 cfs to 50 cfs or so, and is falling already. IMO you need about 200 cfs in Kettle for it to fish well. Kettle’s watershed got between 0.5” and 1” yesterday, depending on exactly where you were, for reference. That same amount of rain in March probably blows it out for a few days. Water is a worthy adversary.

Hey Swattie, I just want the trees I planted this spring and my garden to get a natural drink of water from the heavens.

My next few fishing trips are going to be on stillwater from my jon boat for panfish, so those bodies of water have plenty of water regardless. I just hope it isn't too hot so I don't fry while on the boat.

We are going to have a freshwater fish fry. Bluegills, Crappie, Yellow perch, and maybe even some LMB. None of those are safe from the grease for a few fishing trips coming up.

Yeah, I’m in WW mode until I start seeing some purple or red on that map. Or several days in short succession of blues.
