Well, seeing all the posts about the recent Royal swap and being very disappointed about missing out as traditional patterns are among my favorite patterns to tie, I went on a bit of a royal binge, and tied up every variation I could think of. Then, I decided to give the original pattern a shot...what do you guys think?

sorry for the photo quality, I'm not a very good photographer...

The fly is tied on a size 8 J. Stockard 207 wet fly hook. this is the pattern as described in Favorite Flies and Their Histories, the only difference being the hook and the ginger hackle (I'm out of brown hen). I kept the gold tinsel tag, the wood duck tail, and, well, the rest is pretty much the modern fly.

Nice!

I meant to do a wood duck'd version for the swap article, but forgot.

I think its nicer than even the tippet version, frankly.

also tied a few with a red floss butt in front of the gold tinsel tag...I'll try to get a good pic of one up soon.

Here ya go...same fly with a red floss butt in front of the tinsel tag.
