Fly Fishing Elitism (from an outsiders perspective)

Trolling gear is extremely expensive. When I was outfitting my Lake Erie boat some years back, I couldn’t believe what rod holders and track cost.

Why doesn’t Great Lakes trolling, either for salmon/steelhead or walleye have elitist vibe that fly fishing is often associated with?
You really had me going there for a minute, and at least two pages. 🙂

Please tell us your theory. I thought I knew but the Erie boat thing has thrown me for a loop.

It's called the "Lake Erie Permit" stamp... Yours for the low price of $9.97, or three years for $79.97, or five years for...

I don’t hear walleye guys or salmon guys talking down about other forms of angling. A quick search of this forum will show multiple instances of fly anglers speaking poorly about bait anglers.

Maybe that has something to do with it.

It could be that when I’m trolling Lake Erie, I don’t often encounter someone fishing in any other way other than trolling for walleye. I might see a pleasure boat or two, maybe a sail boat. Most guys trolling give each other space and courtesy as to not screw up their programs.

As a recent accumulator of fly fishing gear, I've discovered that with a little effort and patience one can acquire a serviceable used fly rod, reel and line for under $100 - even under $50 - or a serviceable new chinese-made rig for about the same cost, roughly equivalent to the cost of a basic Ugly-Stik rig.

The problem with this analogy is I know many, many spin trout fisherman who don't wade or fish a lot of pricey lures. Now while it is entirely possible to fly fish from the bank, how many do so waders, wading boots and other kit also adds to the cost.

Add to that the need (or desire) for a shorter, longer or specialized set-up and all of a sudden fly fishing is WAY more expensive.

All I know is I have a few buddies who want nothing to do with fly fishing and get by with one spinning rod for trout and about $20 in other gear. How many fly anglers can say they would be happy with a single outfit and about 10 flies?

More importantly, how many do?

I’d invite you to better understand the regulation, as that’s not how the law interprets the passage you pasted. Perhaps a little less chest thumping on your end and more reading comprehension.

Chest thumping, really??? To be God's honest I can give a rats azz about the regulation cause I make it a point NOT to fish FFO waters. I do much better in general regs waters......and I do it without having any sort of complex or hang up about not fishing special regs waters.

Reading comprehension......wow.....so your some kind of lawyer there now are you? Or are you just an elitist intellectual?

So why is it that my nice fly gear makes me an elitist but the much more expensive boat and gear makes you a "regular" fisherman?

Boats and such are much more expensive than I could afford. Tens of thousand more than my entire arsenal of fly rods, reels, and gear. I could probably barely get a motor in a trade.

Nice chest thump on the you're boat BTW. 🙂

I explained it above. I think it’s because trollers don’t bash other forms of angling on a consistent basis.

Not a lawyer, but I am able to see that you interpreted the law wrong.

under your interpretation. You're link had the same language as the clip I sourced (the magic of the internet). This is the sameish quote from you link. Again the only thing that is the limiting factor in practicality is the reel. A rod is a rod, I've used fly rods as spinning rigs and spinning rods as fly set ups. That the regulation says fly rod just adds confusion as wtf is a fly rod vs. a spinning rod anyway. Is the differentiation point the fact that they have different guides and reel seats? That's pretty lame.

(2) Fishing shall be done with tackle which is limited to fly rods, fly reels and fly line with leader material or monofilament line attached. Spinning, spincast and casting rods and reels are prohibited.

Any how I'm sure this won't give you closure, you seem that you are one of those dudes that has to have the last loud word and feel "right". And that is a form of elitism. 🙂

Oh really, so you've never been around big, lake gear guys that refer to trout as sissy fish and fly gear as sissy tackle? Don't get out much do ya?

Considering most of the big lake guys are target trout and salmon, no I haven’t heard that.

It literally says spin cast rods are prohibited. Does it get any clearer than that?
