2025 Fly Tying Resolution

As a new fly tier, I've been getting the hang of tying nymphs, parachutes, and comparaduns. I feel like I've made some good progress so far. For 2025, I'm aiming to challenge myself and get comfortable with streamers.

1. Organize the hundreds (thousands?) of flies I have tied and stashed in cups and pucks into workable fly boxes so I don't just tie the same thing (Parachute Adams, Humpies) over and over again.

1. Tie a few mono beast flies (flyes)

If you want to get more into dubbing loops I can heartedly recommend the Smhaen dubbing twister. They tain’t cheap, but after many years of tying flies and using several other dubbing loop tools, that is the only one I’m ever going to use from now on. (See this video)

I hope I’m not turning into a gear junkie but after watching the video, i think I need one.

My resolution is to tie more efficient knots on my flies. A big “THANK YOU” to all of you who provided videos on the Knot Tying Post. All of them will help me. I spend way too much time at the stream trying to switch flies (or, tying new flies due to tree snags…2nd Resolution: Improve casting on tight tree-lined streams).

It sold me. Got it on sale here, and also grabbed a Rite bobbin. Using the emailed 15% coupon the total for both was only $51 (with free shipping).

My goal is to begin a tying adventure.

I picked up the following book.
Favorite Flies for Pennsylvania: 50 Essential Patterns from Local Experts
By: Eric Naguski

It's a great reference for patterns that are effective in PA. My new goal is to start tying patterns and try to successfully tie every pattern in the book. Some i've already done in the past, but many i've never attempted. The book is a good comprehensive look at a variety of the most popular pattens used in PA, including dries, nymphs, and streamers. It does NOT contain tying instructions, but that shouldn't be a problem with so many tying videos on the internet.

Here is a list i typed up of the patterns covered in the book and i classified each type as a general type. It includes the 50 essential patterns from the title, as well as mention of 10 notable PA classic patterns and an additional 5 non-PA classic patterns. The grand total 65 patterns. The flies are listed in the order they appear in the book.

Wish me luck, i think this might be a very ambitious goal. But a good motivation to do more tying and watch less tv.
Excellent book, comes highly recommended
