Nothing serious, just a lighthearted topic......
I remember hearing this was a "thing" back in day when I really got going in flyfishing in the early 90s....
The "20 /20 Club"
An honest 20" wild trout on a size #20 dry fly or smaller.
I racked my brain trying to remember all of the places I've been and fished, and couldn't recall actually landing one until last year.
Mine was a 20" brown on a #22 olive parachute.
I spotted him rising to tiny pseudo olives in about 1 foot of water right next to a weedbed. The light was perfect that I could watch him tip up and let those tiny little sailboat wings slide down his gullet one after another about a minute apart.
It almost looked stupid. This big alligator mouth sucking a quart of water in like someone flushing a toilet around the little bugs.
I was well away from the water but when I made even the slightest move to get in position he spooked! Slid out into a little deeper water and down. DAMN!
I sat down and waited. Sure enough in about 10 minutes he slid right back to his little spot in the shallow and 5 minutes later started eating again.
I couldn't stand up so I marked him against the bank rocks and weeds.
I crawled in the tall grass well below him , slipped onto my knees and out into the water still on my knees. I was able to shuffle slowly up to a big weed blob below him that hid my approach and into easy casting range.
I watched him rise two or 3 more times to get a good bead on his position because now with the angle change I could only see glassy glare, little wings, and his snout when he came up.
I had to throw a little bit of a hook cast and by some small miracle pulled it off on the very first try with the fly landing right in his lane 3-4ft ahead and all the tippet off to the side. It floated as perfectly as I've ever thrown a dry fly.
It should be over him......and he tipped up , and down my fly went. Just that easy, and I was almost shocked 😂
The moment of disbelief allowed me the extra second to not yank it out of his face or break him off.
I just kinda went....."oh crap look at that!" And when his head went under, I came tight.
The 6x held and he was the best dry fly fish I've ever caught.
Good day. 😁
Anyone else "officially" do it?
You can see that little parachute hanging on for dear life. LOL
