What Are You Tying Today?

That looks excellent.

Is deer’s hair absolutely necessary for these to work? I tried tying with it and it just kept breaking and driving me nuts, so I tied this size 20 imitation of yours using saddle hackle (trimmed), and all floating materials. I could have done better getting a more backward sweep of the wing.

Is your deer hair from a material kit? If your deer hair is breaking it’s junk and should be thrown away. Pick up a new patch of “comparadun” deer hair. A small patch is only 3 or 4 bucks.

Size 14 - CDC & Elk, using natural short/fine deer hair for the wing instead of elk hair.

Very nice fly, John, as always.

I don’t know for sure how Hans Weilenmann, the originator of that fly, came up with the name “CDC and Elk” because I believe he used deer hair in tying it. And he may have used mule deer hair. (But I think your’s looks nicer.)

Do you guys tie bead head PTs with legs and wing case? I kind of like how it looks without them. The peacock flashes more.
