Going to NW PA next week for 5 or 6 days. My inner guilt says to try going for steelhead while I'm there. Tried once before 10yrs ago. Twenty mile creek with my father-in-laws spinner and a woolly bugger. I hooked one but lost it. I have a 7wt rod if I tie a 3x leader on will it hold or should I tie on some 4 or 6 lb mono? I think there are some walk in areas on Elk so that's where I was going to head. Could be total disaster but we'll see.

when you go, dont pack a lunch one day -- rather go to Tudor's Hook n Nook on rt 5 in Lake City ( the BP station. ) The owner is a great guy - a small business owner who is working hard to have a nice business. His lunch sandwiches are absolutely great. His wife makes all of them by hand, the meat ball and sausage sandwiches are wonderful --- you'll only be able to eat half and take half for later. The owner will tell you he buys all his meats local. he's very proud of his business and runs a very nice shop. he also has a nice fishing shop with local flies, gear etc. i think you'll really enjoy your lunch there! ( he serves food from 11am till 2 or 3pm )

not alot of water up there --- Uncle John's web cams look real loooow. but theres nothing like getting out, Elk will be fun --- plenty of room to get away from any crowds. Leaves look like they are mostly down and off the water. you might need some lite or flouro tippets and small bead heads.

enjoy!

Actually, you may be walking into the best water conditions of the season so far. 7 day NWS QPF for the PA lake shore is up around 2". That's isn't a tremendous amount of rain especially given how the year has been, but now that the trees are done sucking water for the year, it'll put more than enough water in the creeks to improve fishing and fish numbers and distribution at least some.

Went Weds the 20th to Elk Creek in Girard. Got there around noon at the Big angler parking lot. Went down to stream walked up stream 1/4 mile and had a nice run all to myself. Plenty of fish stacked up trying to get upstream. I landed one in about 15 minutes on a black woolly bugger. Hooked 4 more but never got them to the bank. Foul hooked one more that I landed. Amazing spectacle that I will do again. Was there for about 2 hours, maybe 8 other guys in area.
