I would like to have a very light rod tube that I can use to protect a rod while backpacking. I have found the one in the link below. Has anyone used this rod tube or have another suggestion?

Thin PVC.

Don't see why one wouldn't go with that design in the link.

Perhaps a mailing tube? Reasonably strong, kinda light?

Central Vacuum tubing, 2 inch should do.

Thanks for your thoughts. They are pretty inexpensive, so I think I will order one and give it a try.

I fly fish and backpack long distances every spring and summer. I used to use a cheap plastic tube untill it bent during a trip. Since fishing is my favorite part of my backpacks, I dont skimp on the tube anymore. My factory orvis tube really isnt that heavy and assures me that my rod will be safe for the back country travel. Save weight elswhere. Light wieght gear and only the bare essentials will lighten your load more than a lightwieght tube. As, I learned on my first backpack, an axe was a really bad idea to take along!
