I bought some kapok from Etsy. Nice stuff for dry fly dubbing. The stuff practically disappears on the thread. Does anyone have an idea as to how it takes color either with dye or permanent markers?

I guess he borrowed some life vests from the storage locker. Was he the Quarter Master? When I took fly tying lessons in the early nineties, we used kapok for Light Cahills. I believe that was what was used before the advent of all the dry fly dubbing now available. The instructor was a Navy vet.
