Never had it, but now I want some! You lost me at olive loaf. then you brought up head cheese. A true delicacy. Like other Terrines, head cheese, when made correctly is amazing.

Olive loaf is still commonly for sale here in the grocery stores near me. At least, it was the last time I took notice of it about a year ago or so.Never had it, but now I want some!

It used to be in most stores in my area for a long time, but demand must not be there anymore. I do see it in some Italian delis though. I always enjoyed it.Olive loaf is still commonly for sale here in the grocery stores near me. At least, it was the last time I took notice of it about a year ago or so.
Ahhh. I'll pass on that one.Not olive loaf, head cheese.
Neat story of your growing years. I agree, Miracle Whip is disgusting and ruins whatever it's put on.When I was a kid, my mother used to send me on my bike with a big basket on front, five blocks away to a little corner grocery store to buy the lunch-meat for our school lunches.
Most of the time it was a pound each of boiled ham or when she was in a good mood, "imported ham" (whatever that was in those days), maybe salami or Lebanon Bologna and Cooper Sharp Cheese or American Cheese.
Sometimes if she wanted to remind me that life was precarious, she'd tell me to get regular bologna which I never liked or wanted to eat as a kid...
If I was going on a school trip, she'd splurge and give me a special treat and I'd buy turkey or "chicken roll" and Swiss Cheese. If the stars were in total alignment, I could even buy a kaiser roll, a small bag of chips and of course Tastykakes.
I'd look forward to that lunch ALL DAY!!! 🙂
As I would stand there waiting for the guy at the meat counter (this was a SMALL store with NO separate deli counter) to slice my cold cuts, I always stared with wonderment at the olive loaf and the pimento loaf and would think...
What the heck is that? Why is it shaped like a loaf of bread with olives or pimentos inside and please dear God, don't let me ever get invited to a friend's house for lunch and have his mother serve me an olive or pimento loaf sandwich or ANY sandwich with Miracle Whip...
Coincidentally, during my trips to that little store I never saw anybody buy any, I never saw any kid in school with an olive or pimento loaf sandwich, I never tasted or was served olive or pimento loaf and still haven't to this day...
But unfortunately, I can't say the same thing about Miracle Whip...
Yuck!
That’s the miracle!Neat story of your growing years. I agree, Miracle Whip is disgusting and ruins whatever it's put on.
Chunks of meat in gelatin I would do, as every soup/stew I make becomes that when refrigerated.i remember seeing head cheese in the deli counter as a kid. i recall it being a square loaf with chunks of oh no i'm not eating that suspended in a baloney looking product.

Baloney in gelatin… no thanks.
Baloney suspended in Anything = grossIt's not baloney in gelatin which would be disgusting, it's pieces of cow or pig face in gelatin... 😋

Add a slice of cheese to that with Italian cherry peppers in olive oil, fresh Italian bread and an iced tea. Puts a smile on my face everytimeI would say a thick slice of baloney suspended in unsalted butter and browning in a skillet prior to being put on a bun with some mustard ain't so disgusting. 😉
I had that same experience at a friend’s house when I was in grade school: tuna, wonderbread, miracle whip, when I had been raised on tuna with chopped celery or onions, hellmans and a dash of dijon with a slice of a ripe Jersey tomato on toasted rye.I was taught by my mother to eat what is put in front of you with a smile whether you like it or not, ESPECIALLY when you are a guest at someone's table.
One time as a kid in elementary school, I forgot my lunch money so I walked the three block back to my house to eat lunch at home which WAS permitted. It was raining and when I got home, my mother was out and the house was locked so I went into our unlocked garage to wait out lunch period.
A neighbor woman saw me walking down the common driveway and going into the garage so she came down to our garage and invited me to have lunch at her house...
It wasn't olive loaf but it was a tuna from a can on Wonder Bread with Miracle Whip. Oh, we ate tuna from a can at our house, but my mother always made tuna salad with celery, sweet relish and other ingredients, always used Hellman's Mayonnaise and in our house Wonder Bread was illegal...
Regardless, I ate every bit of that sandwich, told the neighbor lady how delicious it was, thanked her profusely and prayed I'd never have to eat Miracle Whip with a smile on my face again... 😉
That’s not suspended. That’s cooked.I would say a thick slice of baloney suspended in unsalted butter and browning in a skillet prior to being put on a bun with some mustard ain't so disgusting. 😉
