Top 10 Trout Streams in PA (only name brands)

Speaking of fake cheese...

True story:

I was parked at the Two Mile Run trailhead at Slate Run several years back and had a snack & few beers before heading down. While kicking back, I dropped a single Lance Nip Chee cracker on the ground and just left it there for the critters to enjoy.

When I got back at dark many hours later, the cracker was still there totally intact with nary an ant or nibble. I picked it up and wondered...

Maybe the local rodent & insect population know that Slate is FFO so they do their scavenging for food scraps down the road along Pine...

But realistically, I couldn't help but think they knew better than me to NOT eat that crap. 😉

Sounds like that trailhead had a resident Rattler nearby. 😉

That's food for thought. 🙂

Love a good pork roll and Cooper sandwich. Sometimes I don’t even put an egg on it. I like and will eat all pork roll, but Taylor isn’t my favorite brand if I’m the one buying. I like the ones with a little less of that vinegar profile in the flavor.

Best I ever tasted was the homemade stuff from Shady Maple. If I’m by there I’ll buy 3 or 4 packs and freeze it.
When you can find it, this is my go to: https://www.caseporkrollnj.com/. I love me some pork roll. Cooper Sharp all the way, egg optional, English Muffin or Texas Toast preferred.

The first pork roll egg & cheese breakfast sandwich I ever had was from a deli near the old Holmesburg Prison in Philly and it was love at first bite. The Philly version was on a kaiser roll, probably an Amoroso which will do in a pinch although my favorite are from National Bakery in Scranton.

When eating breakfast out, scrapple is usually my #1 breakfast side meat choice (thick but fried crispy and plain with nothing on top) but I'll opt for pork roll instead if they have it because it is scarce as hen's teeth in diners north of Bucks County.

I like Taylor because it was heavy touted by Pixanne, Captain Noah and other local hero's when I was a kid so it was what my mother bought and I've just grown accustomed to and expect the "tang." I've always wondered about the Case brand I see in Walmart and something from Shady Maple has my interest.

Don't forget Gene London...
When I worked for Bartlett Tree back in the 80's, we trimmed Captain Noah's trees. He showed me the little house in his back yard where he did some of the work for his show, and a lot of his writing. Such a nice man. I cherish those days.

Unless you work for Case's in Trenton... 😎

In regards to the name, it really depends on where you are from. I grew up in suburban Philly, ate the stuff all the time, watched the commercials for Taylor on TV and never, ever, ever heard anyone in the PA burbs or Philly call it Taylor Ham...

I guess it's a Jersey thing. 😉

Must be. Because, I've never heard it referred to as Taylor Ham, it was always Taylor Pork Roll for as long as I can remember.

It’s a geographic thing in NJ. In extreme northern Jersey, it’s called Taylor Ham, everywhere else it’s pork roll. I78 is roughly the dividing line.

In PA, you can really only find it about as far west as Harrisburg, and north to about I80. Maybe around Scranton/Wilkes-Barre too. In PA, I’ve only ever heard it called pork roll.

I had to Google "pork roll." I wasn't familiar with the term. I used to spend quite a bit of time in Philly, too, but in central Pa, pork roll ain't a thang.

Now I buy Spam Single packets by the case for my breakfast sammies

Next time I see you, I’ll bring you a pack. Spam is reasonably similar. To me, pork roll is about halfway between Canadian Bacon and a smoked sausage - Think like Kessler’s flavor. I can’t imagine you wouldn’t like it if you’re a fan of other breakfast meats.

Hey, if Pixanne called it Taylor Pork Roll, it's pork roll. 😉

The Coudersport Shop N Save has it in the meat department.

According to an Internet search, your local Weis Markets sells the stuff... However like where I am, you don't see it on diner menus.

IMHO - Spam is only similar in that it will give you heart disease just as fast but taste and texture-wise, they are way different and unaltered Spam won't curl up like a whole fish in a pan like pork roll.

Which is reminder that if you buy some, cut a couple of slits around perimeter of the slice before cooking so it lays flat in the pan.
