Tenkara Fly Rod

Your "take" on my definition is the only thing absurd.

Fly fishing is using a fly on a rod that casts line, rather than terminal tackle.

Ugly stick - a rod that casts line.
Using a fly on the end, not terminal tackle.

Now if you included weight of the line carrying the fly t h en you would be on to something. You didnt.

Happy new year!

Don't knock Cane Poles. Back in the 50's one of my professors used cane poles with guides threaded and taped on them to Musky fish in Lake Chautauqua. Stuck them out like out riggers and trolled big suckers over weed bed.. GG

You're not suggesting it was a knock on cane poles to compare them to tenkara? ;-)

No ,only true bamboo lovers really know the nuances of a cane pole.
Old timers here in the south would take a cane pole and put a lure on it and stick the lure near a log and work it in a figure 8. Bass would grab it and the fun began. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kX1a_4I8jmA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13KWTb6e-DQ GG

I don't know if you could do this with a tenkara, but a couple old timers (which I guess I am now) told me that they occasionally hooked a big trout while using a cane pole on large water. Then then threw the pole into the water and let the trout drag it around for a while. After a while, they retrieved the pole and then dragged the trout to the bank. More than one fisherman from a previous generation told me this, so I have to believe their stories are more than parables.
