Spot finder fees. First I have heard of such a thing

I think his channel stopped doing as well the last trip is that his videos got monotonous. Every other video was the "best trout stream in the us" or best stream in whatever state, etc. They were staying very long, like 40+ min when they could have easily been kept under 20.

I know I would check some of them out and not watch anymore after a few min, especially the remakes that was just extra footage from his road trip series. At one point and time I watched pretty much every video he published.

Definitely was some game playing with the titles looking for views more recently. I noticed that too. And it makes even more sense now with what’s come out in these more recent videos.

And I fell into a bit of the same groove as you…I’d watch the camping scenes, and maybe a couple minutes of the fishing before moving on.

His old videos are entertaining too! That one with the broke reel and no line and the tiny spinner he couldn’t throw. The overnight up Pine Creek canyon where he didn’t catch anything and only had 10 seconds of footage of a ribeye cooking. He has some classic fishing experiences and if I’m entertained and have a creek in the background. I’m happy. He checks both those boxes.

I'm planning a trip to New Mexico in the fall. Books, YT videos, posting by local shops give me a wealth of information for free. (OK, I bought one book at list and the others I found used.) I plan to stop by local shops and collect more information. And pick up local flies and a few other items to patronize them for their help. If I need or want further help, I can hire a local guide for $400 to $600. I just don't see the market very large for what he is proposing.

Personally, I don't care about "spot burning." If everyone spot burned there would be no secrets and fishermen would be spread out over all the streams.

I used to chuckle at the comments at TU meetings. There was sort of a circular argument that went something like this:

Gee, we need to get the youth into fly fishing, so we sell more licenses, get more people into the supporting environmental causes, help with stream restoration, etc.

We should help teach these kids to cast, how to fish, and how to tie flies. It also helps our local shops.

We should get these kids on the water by telling them some locations that hold fish, so they stay excited and active.

Gee, why are all these people fishing our good spots? Too many people on the water.

Who the heck is burning off these spots? Guys who give up these secrets should be tared and feathered. Especially the YTers and the book authors.

Gee, so few kids are fly fishing these days.

Cycle and repeat.

This is an inferior scenario compared to the current scenario, which is 99% of anglers in famous destination streams. Why would I want to increase my chances of seeing people on less traveled waters when I'm fishing to get away from people? It's not not like I'm hoarding the information. Everyone is free to find it by exploring just like I/we did!

I do not want more pressure on certain streams. People can stay on the famous waters. I definitely disagree with you there.

You've been bashing TU a lot recently, and while I don't care, my local TU chapter (Penns Creek Chapter) has achieved some awesome things. I am just a monetary, non-active member, but I've been thankful for a few of their projects!

Most fly fishing celebrities scrap through and have day jobs. So if Drew is thinking he will he will hit pay dirt with fees for information it will not happen. My guess is was just looking for a way he thought fair to charge with all the information he was sharing.

In fly fishing you are going for status or sharing, but never money. Fly fishing is a niche interest and even for a hot chick with a fly rod, it would never pay even on Tik Tok. The only exception of course is if you start a fly fishing forum. Pure gold and incredible ROI.

In fact, I think I defended local chapters in a post or two.
I used to be a member. I left for two reasons. First, at the national level there was an obvious tilt toward certain candidates who I disagreed with. Second, they started using volunteers to do stream improvements on some private property of rich individuals who didn't open their land to public use. And also fought public access rights.

The local Bucks TU chapter does a lot of stream improvements. Some of which I participated in. I'm also indebted to several great fly tyers I met at TU meetings and who held regular tying sessions where I learned to tie. When I was checking out the Tohickon yesterday I talked to a number of fly fisherman and asked if they were in Bucks TU. They weren't. I suggested they check it out.

I merely mentioned the conversations I observed at some meetings. Sometimes, as a newcomer, you can sit back and make some interesting observations.

I'm not suggesting you need to publicize your hot spots. But I don't have a lot of respect for those who attack those who do.

No problem. I usually word my TU comments carefully. I'm currently reassessing the national level to see if I want to join again. I notice a different tone these days. Maybe a new generation of leadership?
