After breaking off a few large fish on streamers while using a loop knot I've been thinking of putting small split rings on the eyes of the hooks and tying on with an improved clinch knot for better knot strength. Has anyone ever tried this and did it take away from the action of the streamer?

I do this all the time with musky streamers. It works fine.

Continue to be careful with knots as mono often cinches less effectively against split rings as it does against hook eyes.

Nympho,

I'm surprised to hear about the knot failure. Are you using a non-slip mono loop or a perfection loop knot?

I was using the perfection loop with 12 pound fluorocarbon leader.

I use a surgeon's loop knot, simple and works well for me.
