Sandy Hook Salt Jam 11/13/11

I wanted to go to erie simply because i've never caught a "real" steelhead. I went to the SR last fall and caught a 15 inch steelie. I don't count that.

Erie would be quite a drive..and i would probably only ever do it once. But i would go up to the SR anytime I can find the time and someone to go with me to accomplish the same goal.

I HAVE caught plenty of blues and stripers. But only on plugs and bait. I have a fair amount of experience chucking "8nbait" in the surf..and plugs in the inlets..but never tried it on a fly rod.

i've always wanted to...and find it hard to pass up the opportunity to learn from those that know what they are doing.

So i am leaning towards the Salt as well.

Now..I have two months to get some salt gear together...

If it's any consolation to anyone, i'll be throwing an 8wt. I've caught a lot of stripers on my 8wt before and can tell you it handles stripers up to mid twenty inchers and moderate wind just fine. i'm sure a 9 is much better suited for big fish and wind, but right now my wallet is not suited to buying a new outfit, so 8wt will have to do.

an 8 weight is fine. ill most likely bet there. just got a new winston bIIX 10 wt im looking to test i also have an 8 that ill bring if im there. i dont know much about fishing sandy hook but the spring lake area is always got fish this time of year too . not a far drive.

so, fly size and colour then? is there ever any action opposite the surf side on the bay? is it wadable back there?

what time are you looking to have people assemble?

lead us fred, lead us.

I'm going to attend this, no doubt about it. I have all the gear except boot foot waders, so here's an excuse to buy some. Plus I may take a day or so off.

I've geared up for salt and only slightly fished it at OBX a couple times. I'm all for this; it'll give me some experience on where to go and what it's all about. So far all I've done is read up on it.

What kind of lodging is available in that area?

John

Salt or no Salt?

Sandy Hook is remarkable unique fishing and land form area (the Cape Cod of NJ state).
I have fished Sandy Hook several times and remember outstanding time I have had.

If you get lucky and the school of stripes or blues comes by, you will hammer them and come back home with sore hand from pumping the fish, than you sleep like a baby from amount of oxygen.

There are more fine locations in the area; one of them is Breezy Point – exceptionally unique bird nest and park peninsula with Manhattan and Sandy Hook view and Long Island beaches, including angler’s paradise - Montauk.

I’m tear apart between Erie and Sandy Hook jams and they are both appealing to me but I lean towards the steelhead jam.
Either way I go I will pack my windbreaker jacket first.

I never stay the night I'm to cheap but if someone gets a good deal I have no problem sleeping on there floor :-D

Gfen I will try to be there two hours before first light I pack water and a bunch of Irish hoagies and fish till I can't fish no more . One of the days i'm going to do some night fishing It's something I haven't done yet and am looking forward to .

Skybay you already did the steel jam time for something different IMHO

I put this on the calendar. Hopefully nothing 'important' pops up. I'll have to bring my gear home from DE.

Will we be meeting any where in particular or assembling at a certain time? Never been to Sandy Hook, so looking forward to it. Plan on bringing both 8 & 10 wt. I skipped the 9!

First try didn't work . I'll have a good amount of clousers.

they will work for sure..

Flies
deceivers = white, chart., olive, and blue back (yellow too))
clousers = chart/white, yellow/white (bass love yellow)
Bobs Bangers all colors
all tied on 3/0 will do.
thats all you need..

that time of year it will be windy (north east is the best)

Don't forget the back side of the hook (plum island)
The point has deep water in close, got to get down fast there for the larger fish

No one needs to see that.

Don't worry the beaches are closed to swimming when we will be there. I would like to add to the list of flies sometimes going small is good like sand eels bay anchovys and peanut bunkers patterns .

Deep enough were boats come in close enough sometimes to fish the area we will be fishing 😛int:

Sandy Hook in Mid November can be an awesome experience.

If the date isn't good for you or you'd like to try the ocean a couple weeks earlier, please see the Announcements and Events forum for details of an alternative salt jam at IBSP on the weekend of 22 Oct. This is not to step on Fredrick's jam (Fredrick and I have discussed the option of two different dates) - by all means attend both events if you care to. Normally, we have one jam per season per event but on occasion if there's a willingness to organize 'em, we'll have alternate opportunities.
