rod recommendation for small streams

want to go fishing in small streams, there are a lot near me, just need to venture out. i have never fished for trout and never caught one.
can you guys recommend me a rod, Length and Weight appropriate for small stream fishing. the one i have is orvis clearwater outfit 9' 6wt, feels like throwing bricks out there.
Yeah a 6wt is a bit much, though I know guys who fish w/ 4wt rods and overline them w/ 6wt for their "small stream" rods.

In general, my advice-especially for "nOObs" is, you don't need a special "small stream rod". Heck, sometimes a long rod is a benefit on small streams as it gives you a longer reach while allowing you to keep more line off the water.

But, with that said, a solid 7.5'-8' 4-5wt rod would serve you well overall. You're rarely gonna fish water in PA for trout where a rod like that wouldn't suffice.
