Recent Rain

there was a brush fire near spring creek Wednesday and another Thursday just south of tyrone. Ash was flying when I fished. Near tyrone, and I'm not making making accusations, a house had a burn barrel going. About 2 hours later emergency crews were dispatched.
Ash was probably flying from the PGC controlled burns. They burned prescribed fires in a bunch of the fields off shiloh and barns lane Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

There were some brush fires around too

People are morons. I'm driving to go fishing this morning and what do I see? Someone just down the road has a massive fire raging in the woods behind their house. Why are people so stubborn to listen? We, too, have had lots of fires around, yet people keep burning!
As George Carlin once observed, think of the average person and how dumb he is. Then remember that, by definition, half of the people are below average.

Bam, you need to embrace the propane.
Dear 6xAdams,

Propane is for people who lack reliable electricity. 😉

Even the George Foreman grill does a great steak or burger, in a pinch.

I literally cook over every imaginable fuel except for dung. I prefer charcoal, but for convenience nothing beats electricity.

All that said, around here it's drier than a one humped camel fart. I'm with Bamboozle and would never start an open fire in current conditions unless I was trying to fend off a horde of Mongol invaders.

It's really bad here but hopefully tomorrow brings the rain that is promised.

Regards,

Tim Murphy 🙂

Yes, the Game Commission did a LOT of controlled burning this year on the gamelands flanking Spring Creek canyon. I wonder what wildlife they are specifically trying to provide habitat for.

Well, the amount of rain that we have received thus far in Mifflin County is pathetic. Radar shows a good line that might provide some downpours in a bit. Let's hope. Otherwise, this "storm" is playing out to be just like so many others in the recent years - a major letdown.

hope you get some, they're predicting heavy storms here tonight. there's an ugly line of red heading our way for this evening. we need the rain, but this could be a case of be careful what you wish for...

Pheasants, song birds, turkey, deer, rabbits etc. The fields they burn seem to be managed for native forbs, warm season grasses and wildflowers which can benefit many species

the predicted 1 1/2" of rain is now less than a 1/2".
the predicted river height is now 2' lower. ugh

Dear Lars,

The freaking sun is out in Harrisburg! We were forecast for 1" plus yesterday. It's now down under 3/4" but looking at the radar locally this is going to be a big, "swing n' a miss" for sure.

The bands seem to be riding Rte. 15, and it looks like the whole thing may ride north of Harrisburg. I have a Winter's worth of dead tree limbs and cardboard boxes from the Winter's Amazon purchases to burn and I'm probably going to have to do around Easter while I stand by with the garden hose.

On a side note, since recycling became mandatory have you noticed that everything you have shipped to your house comes with 3 damned boxes of increasingly larger sizes nestled together in one vastly over-sized box, replete with brown paper surrounding everything? 😉

Regards,

Tim Murphy 🙂

Future radar says you're getting some weather around 10pm this evening. Western and NC PA got hammered with wind and rain earlier today. (Mom is constantly checking on her adult babies who live between Harrisburg and Hershey.)

Larry,
We actually got a pretty good downpour that lasted for about 30 minutes. It is now lightly raining here again, and when looking at the rainfall, I think Miff-Co will get some more downpours here in the near future.

Things are looking up again, at least in Central PA.

Yep, it's raining pretty dang hard again here now. I am now grilling chicken quarters in a downpour.
Dear jifigz,

I was debating cooking outside with the forecast. I could have pulled it off, I'm sure. But with discretion being the better part of valor I decided to go with an old favorite, Honey Garlic Chicken thighs in the Instant Pot.

Should be ready in about 15 minutes or so!

Regards,

Tim Murphy 🙂

I cook outside no matter what. If I have plans to cook on my Weber Kettle, nothing will stop me.

And I am sticking with the Weber Kettle. Best cooking appliances I have ever owned. They last forever. Parts are easily replaceable and findable, and they do everything and anything I need them to.

I don't need a Blackstone. I don't need a Traeger smoker or electric smoker. Just a good ol' Kettle.
