Recent Rain

Dear krayfish,

I certainly believe those totals but find it weird that things were that localized around here. I live just off Rte 443 about halfway between Front Street and Bow Creek Road in Grantville. I'll bet we only got an inch or so of rain here. At 5:30 last evening Manada Creek was turd brown but 100% within its banks. I expected things to be much worse because I've seen an hour-long thunderstorm do way more damage out here.

Regards,

Tim Murphy

My yard had standing water. Only other time I saw that was Irene. I was in Lemoyne yesterday after 5 and a random cell came through that dumped about an inch in 15 minutes. West shore seemed to get more. My buddy was over at manada golf course and they were not getting anywhere near the amount of rain I was seeing on the west side.

River forecast is still for 265k peak.

I hope everyone is safe and well. I found this interesting given the current conditions:

Fishing High Water

Also, funny that the auto captions interpret all of the water noise as applause.

185k at Sunbury..... headed your way.
Will peak at 215K or so in Sunbury tomorrow. The West Branch and North Branch are still rising.

Incredible amount of rain up there, hope folks are able to clean up and recover. Many will ask what can be done, but when we get 7in of rain in these crazy storms the fact of the matter is its going to flood. The best thing we can do is stay out of harms way.
Plus here in Galeton we haven't had water since late Friday afternoon. They can't find the break in the main line yet.

Bob Child's(sandfly) place got hit very hard. Stopped in to see him yesterday. Water came up a foot or so up the side of his house. Completely flooded his basement & garage! He lost a lot!

The short-term (30 days) and long-term (365 days) mean areal precipitation for Pennsylvania is up above average. Should provide for some good fly fishing this fall.

The Juniata near me (as of yesterday, even) was beautiful looking. Yeah, the water was still higher than normal, but very fishable, very good clarity, etc. The river up my way drops so much faster than the big river does.

My area was in a drought and I’m afraid after a week since the storm we are dry again. Stream from yesterday on dog walk.

Looking at the maps above, it doesn't look like it should be that bad. Doesn't look like there is any stream flowing under those rocks where trout could be hiding.

Wow. A little surprised by that. (I think) you’re in the Laurel Highlands right? That area was super dry, but the gauges don’t suggest things are still as dry as that photo depicts. And the rain from Debby was pretty widespread. Yeah, some localized hot spots, but everywhere in that area got a fairly good soaking.

Is that specific location close to that stream’s mouth by chance? I know a fair number of small freestone streams that have surface flow for most of their length, but in lower flows sink close to their mouths where there’s a geology change as it approaches the larger receiving stream. Asaph Run (Tioga County) comes to mind, but there are many others in PA. It can have good surface flow just a few hundred yards upstream but its mouth is often dry. Just a thought.

^If the above does apply, check it out about a half mile upstream. I bet there’s surface flow if so.

Yes. Laurel Highlands

Extreme eastern Westmoreland Co. , Somerset Co was declared a disaster area due to drought. This stream does have water above and below but there is a mile long stretch where it is like the picture above.

Bucks county is dry as a bone again already. We didnt get much out of the hurrican here at all. Just cut the lawn for the first time in 5 weeks, cloud of dust and most of what i mowed was weeds. Anything that was planted this spring is long since burned up to a crisp. And its hot as heck again out there right now. This summer sucked

another 1-3 in of rain coming to central/ ncpa this weekend. Hopefully not enough to trigger any repeat flooding. Some of the hardest hit areas saw extreme damage, worse than 72 floods.

I think my in-laws are in the same rain void swath that you are (between Derry and Blairsville).
