Really Frustrating First Day

Frustration has less of a sting when others share in it. :)

For the wolly bugger I would go with 14.

So, I went out twice this weekend. Saw some caddis but no trout rising. Fished different nymphs but no strikes. I started talking to a kid about 15 or 16 who was killing the trout. He gave me some pointers and actually gave me a tiny midge to try. I caught another sunny! Had a couple more strikes after that, but I keep forgetting to grab the fly line before I set the hook, and just hear my line peel out of the reel.
Still looking for my first trout. I think I'm getting better on technique, but I need to learn what nymphs to use when and what size. Also not sure about how high to set the indicator.

Don't ever let go of your line and then you won't need to remember to grab it.

Can someone please explain this to me?

i wouldn't the first thing to do if a fish ever takes to my fly

Stagger,

You should have slack line in your left hand, while your right had pinches the line from Fly back to the rod grip. That way there is no slack, except for what is on the water, to take up.
Once you set the hook, you then work to get the line back on the reel.

A pictures worth a thousand words so here we go:
