I never painted eyes, but I love to see everyday items repurposed for fly tying. With the exception of certain materials, it's all open to interpretation.
When my wife heads to the craft store she leaves me behind. She knows better.
That's a serious rig! I imagine you paint a lot of lead eyes in your shop. When I need to paint some I generally just use a Styrofoam cup - cut slits in the rim and wedge them into the slits. But then I always have a Styrofoam cup at tying desk anyway - I put my finished flies on the rim as I'm tying to let the head cement dry. Just stick the point of the fly into the cup, then release if from the vise.
Thanks lestrout. I wish I could take credit for the Styrofoam cup idea, but I saw someone else using one to put finished flies on. I think it was tightlinevideo on YouTube.
