Mahoning Creek

Most stuff I'm finding is about the lake, but if it's a trib to the Allegheny and it is a cool water creek, it probably has pike and walleye in it.. That article suggests they tried fingerling stockings of trout.. I'd just go fish it and see how you do. Exploring can be one of the best parts of fishing..

Thanks, just checked it in the trout stocking section of PFBC regs. Will make a scouting trip, I've been to that area in the past on non-fishing adventures.

There is a fly fishing only section of Little Mahoning Creek off of 119 between Indiana and Punxatawney near Rochester Mills. I know where Mahoning Creek empties into the Allegheny. I don’t really know of any trout fishing in Mahoning Creek. Little Mahoning is stocked with trout pretty well. Not really sure where the Little Mahoning meets Mahoning Creek but that would probably be your best bet if you’re looking for trout fishing.

"Channel catfish ranged from 14 to 15 inches with a large individual of 27 inches also sampled. A dozen of the smallmouth bass sampled ranged from 11 to 14 inches in length, and walleye were running from 16 to 21 inches in length."

That sounds pretty good!

I agree. It sounds like a place worth fishing.

When I lived in Tionesta during the 90's, I used to fish Mahoning Creek a few times a year mostly in the first 5 miles or so below the dam. It was worth fishing for smallmouth and walleye, although no better than a dozen other streams of similar size in western PA. I used to fish nearby Redbank Creek as well, mostly in the vicinity of New Bethlehem. It was also a decent bass fishery. I liked Mahoning better though because there were fewer runty northerns than in Redbank to schnitzel off my flies. I got tired of that..

Wikipedia says its "a popular destination for fly fisherman".

I live about an hour from there and nobody I know has ever fished it. I drive over the section further east in Punxsutawney every time I go back and forth to camp but never stopped.
