I have a red squirrel hide and a grey squirrel hide. What the heck is a fox squirrel!? And is it absolutely necessary? Kinda like the urine stained underbelly fur of a vixen fox?

A Fox Squirrel is a completely different species of squirrel. They are generally a bit larger than a grey squirrel. Definitely a different tone of color (more yellowish-red). Great fur for fly tying - dubbing for nymphs, tail hair for hair wings, etc. Here is a fresh roadkill that I picked up and skinned out a few years back in Huntingdon Co.

Nothing is absolutely necessary. If you blend grey squirrel fur and red squirrel fur together you’re getting real close to the color of some fox squirrel fur. You will find patterns that call for it but anything can be substituted for and I’m pretty certain it won’t effect the fish catching ability.

As the guy on YouTube, Oholi says “The fish won’t care.”

I wouldn’t buy one just because someone else used it. I rarely follow a fly pattern exactly and couldn’t care less how someone else tied something.

Thanks.
