I decided to venture up to the Adirondacks for the first time. Team USA was holding a regional event there and this gave me the opportunity to visit a famed river and also fish a lake for the first time.

Friday, a friend and I began the six hour trek. Weather was beautiful and when we were getting close I could tell how picturesque the area would be. However, when we hit the Saratoga Springs area it began to get dark.

We drove into the storm and hit the heaviest rain I have ever witnessed. First time I have ever had to pull off the highway, because the wind shield wipers could not keep up. Within minutes it had passed and we kept on moving.

Drove by the Cascade Lakes with the sheer cliff walls and was in awe. I was stunned by the beauty. It was my first take of the waters in the area.

Arrived at our place of stay.

Such Team USA FF is affiliated with the Olympics in some way, we were able to stay with the actual athletes in their dorm center. All of the guys had a good laugh at this. I mean, you go to the cafeteria and there are just pure athletes sitting with you. Here we are with beer guts a hanging with these ladies and guys.

If there ever was a picture oxymoron....

Staying at the center was pretty cheap. 3 nights was $200 and this included breakfast, lunch, and dinner from the cafeteria. Food and drink basically at anytime from 6am to 9pm. O, and an awesome ice cream bar. Those Olympians eat good! Additionally, it gave us free access to all of the other Olympic centers and museums.

The Ausable river is really spectacular.

And so is Mirror Lake.

The lake produced these two pigs....First is Hunter Enloe's Lake trout and second is Robert Humston's Atlantic. The Laker came from the bank and the Atlantic came from the boat less then 50 yards off shore. Both on fly rods.

Fishing was great at both the lake and river. I noticed caddis, march browns, stone flies, and olives hatching on both. However, the F'n black flies can burn in hell. Eatin alive and forced me to wear my Buff most of the time on the river. I only took one fish picture. Stocky rainbow...

Even though the Ausable is stocked, I managed to catch quite a few wild browns and even a (Gasp) brook trout. I promptly threw it on the bank.

I did not fair well on the competition side of the trip, but man did I have a blast! Got to meet a bunch of new friends and even two Canadians that I harassed non stop.

Ya know, I always said the Lehigh was the hardest river I have ever waded. That changed. The Ausable in the Falls Gorge and Whiteface area is insane. I fell in each day I was there and busted up my knee pretty bad. Never came home with so many bruises from a fishing trip.

I will end this with the rest of my photo's....

Skittering and popping stoneflies

Multi rocks means difficult in wading. Did you use a walking stick? The way I almost fell a couple of times last friday made me think I needed my walking stick.

What did you find works best in your presentation - streamers, nymphs, dries?

Did not use a wading stick, but obviously should have.

I nymphed 70% of the time on the river. I did catch a few on dries. Caddis and big foam stone flies skittered and popped produced voracious strikes that I usually missed the hook set on. Usually was too early and did not let the fish really take the fly.

On the lake stripping streamers and boobies produced for me. I did catch my only fish from the bank with a caddis dry. Figured out too late that the fish were taking black shuttlecocks. I tied a few up at lunch and gave them to my teammate before his session. He ended up catching a few and missing a few with that pattern.

Wanted to visit that area but the black flies keep me from going. Nice pics. BTW, wear that buff all the time.....makes you look better. LMAO

Nice report, Shane.

^ No doubt. I've fished at lot of rivers, and the Ausable puts true meaning to the label "high gradient" river.:-o

+1
I was there last year and caught fish in that rocky stretch and then it rained that evening and everything was blown out the next day.
Has anyone ever fished it in the fall?

Fished the Ausable in mid June a few years back. Big foam stonefly with a large pheasant tail dropper. Best fly was basically a huge bead head hare's ear. Some caddis action. No good hatches when I was there. It was during an early heat wave. Talk about pocket water! One of the few places where I've been nervous about wading. That stretch around Whiteface is intimidating. Took a break and fished close to the ski jumps. A lot tamer up that way. I had no trouble with black flies but my daughter got pretty bit up on a hike near Heart Lake. I love it up there and look forward to a return trip sometime.

Looks like an awesome trip Shane.

The Hungry Trout is a great place to stay with great food and fish out back. I love it there but that river is no fun. The flies got me so bad once years ago my wife said I looked like LBJ with swollen jowls and ears. so many streams and rivers arena walk in the park after the Ausable.

Cool report. I fished the Ausable a few years back. Family trip, not a fishing trip. Late July. Water temps mid 70's by midday. Shouldn't have fished probably, but I did. Early morns when temps at their coolest. Caught a few each day. Mostly golden stone nymphs.

Would have liked to fish some tribs but didn't have time.

Thanks for the report and pics.

Ethan is a great guy. The Hungry Trout helped immensely with the event. We even had our awards ceremony at the resteraunt. The first few pictures of the river are the view from the resteraunt. Regarding the little black bastards. A few of my buddy's were bleeding from their ears and neck pretty bad. I got it only on my arms. I am still itching

That's a cool area. There are lots of other great streams aside from the WB Ausable, its hard to find somewhere bad to fish. The WB Ausable is the most famous and has the most history.

The NY state record brook trout was taken from a reclaimed remote pond in the Adirondacks last year. I think it was something like a 8 mile hike to the pond and the fish was around 6 lbs.

The tribs of the EB of the Ausable are a lot of fun, I've caught all 3 types of wild trout from them, including some big browns.

100% deet, a wading staff, and size 4 black, golden stoneflies, and huge stimulators are the ticket. Nice report. One of the most fun and scenic rivers you will ever fish.

That differs slightly from the packing list I gave Shane:

Bowling shoes
fly swatter
#18 PT
#22 Al's Rat

Interesting event to participate. Canadians, eh? Any Russians there reliving the glory of 1980 Olympics?

Shane, I was there for my annual Ausable Trek from Thursday thru Sunday. You bahstads clogged up "my" pocket water on Saturday! Plus there was a flyfishing club that brought 30 people down from Montreal! The fishing Friday was on fire all day and then we dodged t-storms starting around 3pm. I lost a big one that i had right in frint of me that wanted to take another run and I got ****y and tried to horse it into the net instead of letting it run one last time.

Knowing that team thing was going on Saturday we headed over to the Saranac River but it was a slow pick and very windy in the morning (others in our group said Saranac's fishing got hot though in the afternoon) and we headed back over to the crowded Ausable. We stay right in Wilmington at the Wilderness Inn. 3 nights lodging in our own cabin and 8 meals total (3 breakfasts, 3 awesome dinners in their restaurant and 2 lunches) cost us only $210. They call it the Fisherman's Package.

Hey, what did you think about Whiteface Mountain? Pretty friggin' awesome mountain. I love it up there, that whole area is awesome and the fishing is usually really good.

DEET? I never use it up there I use Z'Off and this other all natural stuff that works great up there. With the cool breeze this past weekend bugs weren't a problem up there at all this year. Every couple years we get lucky like that up there (and only once in a while is it truly God awful with bugs.) I can't see how you guys got really bit up. Most of us were talking about how few the blackflies & mosquitoes were.
