Or Tom’s.
ThanksStreams in Michaux right now are very low. With that said, exploring such streams, even if you don't fish, is a fun and worthwhile endeavor.
I'll second those above who have pointed out (as I have for many years). . . when you visit South Mountain/Michaux/Catoctin, have reasonable expectations. These streams are generally very small, acidic, surrounded with dense rhododendron, and not the place you would expect to catch dozens of fish. I've had many good days, but consider a good day on one of these streams to be several small brook trout brought to hand. Many times, I get one, two, or none. I keep coming back.
South Mountain may look like Potter or Lycoming County, but one shouldn't expect similar fishing.
Got it.If you are expecting it to be any better than mountain creek or any of the other creeks in the area, don’t waste your time. There’s fish and I’ve seen some decent ones in there but overall it just doesn’t fish like other class a streams. If you do go, fish it in the upper part but even then keep your expectations in check as it is a tiny stream that, at least in my experience, never gives up many fish. It’s sort of the equivalent of Tom’s Run in that it looks amazing and aparantly has a class a population but never really produces, except it’s twice as small.
Was thinking of fishing it earlier this year and ended up walking along it. Beautiful stream, but tiny even compared to Tom’s.
But sometimes only a native brookie will scratch the itch.
Luckily big spring is only a little past mountain creek, and the brookies there are plentiful, but they are as wary as browns.
I’ve never fished big spring but I will give it a shot, I’ve never had a problem with brown trout being stubborn but I’ll keep that in mindWas thinking of fishing it earlier this year and ended up walking along it. Beautiful stream, but tiny even compared to Tom’s.

Big spring is a stream that you basically don’t ever need step into. If you do the fish have spooked.I’ve never fished big spring but I will give it a shot, I’ve never had a problem with brown trout being stubborn but I’ll keep that in mind
Got about 6 brookies today on king gap your right very little stream but I would say it’s worth the struggle for some beautiful fishThey’re not that far apart. Go check it out. If it’s too small for your appetite, then just go to Mountain.
You’re right it was a really really small stream and I could just about step across it without getting in the water. But it held some really, really pretty Brooktrout in the plunge pools towards the head water. Fish were small, but worth it.Never fished that one, but have fished some of its neighbors. There’s some wild Trout in the South Mountain/Michaux SF area, but I have never fished a stream I would call “good” in that area. A lot of just “ok” streams, and IMO the best ones are the obvious ones…Mountain/Conococheague/Antietam/etc. There aren’t really any hidden gems in that area.
Kings Gap probably has fish, but it will be tiny. Just a couple square mile drainage. Probably a good one to try out when everything else bigger is blown out high. Otherwise, you’re not gonna have much water to work with.

Did you catch them above or below the stretch of posted water? That was the stream where I caught my very first native brookie, love to see some nice fish come out of it.Got about 6 brookies today on king gap your right very little stream but I would say it’s worth the struggle for some beautiful fish
