Has PAFF jumped the shark?

As someone who has written a blog, a TRULY dying medium, for about 10 years, I would say many folks don't want to read or write much anymore, unless you name the creek in the title, then they'll read that title, and then the algorithms will pick it up and boost it.

There seem to be plenty of dudes in their thirties on here, but do the 20 year olds stay, especially after being called flatbrimmers and euronymphers? 😳 I don't know.

Podcasts are what's up. And the 'gram, yo. Post some pic that will eventually be AI generated. Check for the correct number of fingers. It's a dead giveaway 😉

Real or AI will replace stocked or wild?

Dear TimMurphy,

Telling people how to think has been a centerpiece of the PAFF. The more the site has changed the more things have stayed the same.

Remember the good old days when we used to talk about:
Not enough rain
Too much rain
Stocking over Class A streams
Spot burning
Wet Wading Danger
Stomach contents
Sunglasses Help
A good place to fly fish?
And any old but a goody … Mountain Lion sightings.

Regards,

Dave Kile 😎
Wait what was the wet wading danger? I must have been tuned out for that episode. I’m genuinely curious.

Dear 5footfenwick,

It was mostly about potential infections.

As a kid who spent most of his childhood wading Lower Bucks County sewer cricks in sneakers I kind of built up an immunity decades ago. I don't say that to make light of what is a real issue for some people. I just think playing in stink as a kid had benefits. 😉

Regards,

Tim Murphy 🙂

Ok thanks that makes sense. As someone who wet wades a lot I was a little concerned I’d missed something. I’m usually wet wading tiny cold brookie streams for the most part. I’m assuming/ hoping risk of infection is pretty low in those places.

I used to run a Catskill jam in the spring and fall. Too many people got bent or ruined the idea of keeping them going
That’s a shame really! I spend so much time up there anyway that it would be fun to run into some other forum members at something organized. Especially since there’s apparently no place to eat or grab a beer after like 9 pm anymore.

There has also been a few steelhead jams, but there hasn't been any in a while

Tim Murphy is correct. Alby started it back in 2006 with post about some problems he had wet wading.

This place is great, IMO. I have guys i met on here i consider friends now who i have had many fun days on the water with. The knowledge here on any fly fishing topic is top notch. I'm middle aged and don't do social media so this place is perfect for me

When I first joined, I was working an "office job", always in front of a PC which blocked quite a few websites. Not this one though. PAFF was a God-send in that regard. New job, new career, new state, all that has affected my participation on the board. But, I still check in at least 2x a day. Met so many great people here.

I really, really miss hosting the NCPA Summit. I keep thinking of ways for me to logistically bring it back. It's a7h haul now for me from Charleston to Potato City, and I think folks understand-it's a bit of a hard sell for my wife and kids to say to them "Hey I don't get many Sundays off, but I'm going to use this one to drive up to the cabin for a long weekend of fly fishing-oh, sorry...you can't come, even though you love the cabin and only get there once a year or so!" Very different from when we were in PA, going up at least 6x a year.

But maybe...just maybe...I'll find a way to bring it back. We always had a great time. From Skybay looting a farmer's field of his turnips to Bikerfish's tent getting attacked by bears, you just never know what will happen when we all get together!

You know, we could all do an impromptu meet by camping at a state park located in a good fishing region. Just someone make a post about it, and then let others jump in. It would be up to each attendee to secure a camp site and show up.

I think it would work out swell. I would create it right now, but I am not sure if I will be able to pull off attending the newly organized fall jam. Next year, though....

For a couple of years, it was a pretty sweet gig. We would basically rent the entire motel in Hancock. I'd have one of the local guides talk to us about fishing in the morning. We had plenty of seats in boats for everyone to get out and do a float trip. Held a raffle with the money going to the fudr. Me and one other guy would donate gear and I did get some additional stuff from a local shop. In the evenings, 6 ft table of food for everybody to pick at. DaveS spent 90% of his trip rowing other people around so that they could catch fish on a regular basis. Had some pretty memorable trips and a lot of good times. When gear would get broken without so much as an apology, things would go missing and the attitude of entitlement to be taken down the river that they wanted to fish became apparent, had to pull the plug on it. There's a couple of us that still get together though.

I've been part of a lot of people's fishing history where they've said, that's the biggest trout I've ever caught and probably will ever catch.

I don't think PAFF has jumped the shark at all. I view it as a living breathing entity of sorts. It has its ebbs and flows but all in all it is a great group of people. If you have a question you surely can ask and get a half a dozen different answers.
I miss the characters. anyone remeber 1 weight ? I miss the long form posts from NightStalker and Salmonoids camping/fishing trips.
As life changes I hope to make some of the meet-ups and Jams in the furure as long as I'm healthy and able to get around our great State.

Yeah, what ever happened to Nightstalker? I miss seeing his big browns caught at night.
He's still kickin! I'm friends w/ him on FB, and he came up to my cabin a couple times for the NCPA Summit. I don't think the fish were big enough for him though!

jif, having been involved in many Jams, I can tell you that someone or some few must take the helm and "organize" it or it won't happen.

If there is a desire for an impromptu Hancock gathering, count me in. I’ve met some very interesting people sitting outside of the UDI or Troutfitter at the end of a day of fishing. Beer, scotch and stories!!!

I know. I said I'd organize, but I'm not sure if I will be able to attend this year, so I won't.. But all it takes is a post to start the plan.

The snowball will grow with each post that pushes it down the hill..

Please see prior post. "Count me in" sounds like, "if someone else does the organizing I will/might show up."
