I have been FF for bass for more years than I can count. Sometimes the best retrieve is very slow. While fishing a popper of bass bug. Just barely pop it. Let it sit. repeat. Another tip, once your popper or bug hits the water don't move it. Let it rest 15 to 20 seconds. When a bait hits te water next to a bass they will tend to move away from the sound only to come right back and check it out. If you should see a bass come to your bug. Let it rest wait until he is right on top of it. Give it a slight bump. Many times then they will just nail it or sometimes they just hang below and just suck it down. That being said there are times when a faster retrieve is needed. Experiment see what they want. I always start with a slow retrieve and take it from there. Especially on large mouth.
