Favorite wet flies?

I've had a lot of problems with Starling. There doesn't seem to be a lot of material to work with. The ones on the top left work, but are a little long for the small stuff. (wing shoulder) The others seem almost useless. Any thoughts?

You use the smaller back feathers on a starling, not the longer lower ones. The feather length is generally from the tie in point to the start of the barb and sparse on a soft hackle. Almost any feather is suitable, hen, grouse, starling, partridge, etc., the fly works more from the action of the rising at the end of the drift than from the combination of materials, though some work better than others in the right conditions.

I better get the pellet gun out then. ????
