Downsizing - Junk We Don't Need!

I'm as frugal as they come, my tippet is kept in a vest pocket for free. 😉
Yep. This is what I am going back to. Just the few spools of tippet I need kept on me, not on something extra I don't need.

The only downside I can see is that I could drop my actually spool of tippet in the water in some fast current and lose it forever, but I can live with that. I tend to fish small streams where I am not going to lose something forever most likely.

My IPhone takes beautiful pics! And, it has my Topo Maps+ app on it. Wouldn't be without it.
Paper DeLorme on the car along with the phone for me. Yeah emergencies can happen but half the places I fish don't have reception and for the other half, I'd rather die out there than have technology on me frankly.

For me, the entire fly fishing scene today with cameras, go pros and whatnots isn't my style at all. YMMV and that is fine too, still after having watched goons exhaust a fish with 5 minutes for photo ops before release makes me annoyed. So I've taken the stance to be something different for others to wonder about for themselves, if a chance meeting on the stream ever happens.

I like the Top Maps+ app on my phone, because it works via satilite and not reliant on a cell tower. It tells me exactly where I am on a stream that I may not be familure with. Newer models can also sent out an SOS without needing a cell tower.

Sounds neat for sure but I'm a stubborn old man that hates the new fangled things you whipper snappers use
😂

I'm half joking, not about the first part but certainly the second part of that sentence

Im as frugal as the next guy but you can buy a tippet holder for under 10 bucks.
Dear dudemanspecial,

I think I got 5 of them for $ 12.00 from Temu. I ain't proud.

I have one on every one of 4 packs, 2 chest packs and 2 sling packs, that I split off from 2 larger packs and a Columbia Vest that was so loaded it would break a solid wood hanger if I hung it outside on the porch to dry after it got rained on.

I have a trout pack that holds everything I ever need as long as I remember where I left my 35mm film canister filled with split shot. It's still sitting on top of the freezer in the garage from when I found it in November.

I have couple of different bass and panfish packs. One dedicated to SMB, on to LMB, and one for panfish. I'm constantly swapping boxes around and forgetting where they wind up. I could literally grab any one of them and be covered for all WW fishing.

When you get down to it, I have way too much crap. I could easily pick no more 10 to 12 flies and cover all my fishing with one of the 12. I may not match every stage and size of every mayfly, or cover all levels of the water in 3 colors for bass, but if I can't drum up a fish on one of those flies, I'm the problem. 😉

Regards,

Tim Murphy 🙂

I noticed a lot of you carry a flask or beer with you. I drink more beer than I probably should but I have never mixed fly fishing and drinking. To be fair I do fish hard when I’m out so I feel like drinking would just slow me down.

On the subject of downsizing, I don’t carry anything I would never need stream side. Just have 1 fly box for streamers, 1 for nymphs and wets, and 1 for dries. Depending on the style of fishing I am doing I will only carry 1 box and lea e the others on the truck. Without water my pack probably only weighs 2 lbs.

I used to mix fishing and drinking a lot. I would drink and then go fishing. Eventually, I would just end up drinking next to a body of water. There was not really any fishing involved in my fishing trips. When it began to interfere with one of favorite hobbies since childhood and rob me of those memories, it started to become a problem. Just one of the many ways.....

Yeah I like to sip a good whiskey while I'm fishing.
Truth be told, I don't hardly drink enough of it while I'm out. I won't kill someone on my way home because I'm buzzed, so we are talking about only a few shots in many hours.

So it only takes a few minutes tops from my fishing.

More on-line with 6FF. Might take a nip while I'm stopped having lunch or maybe at the top of a run before heading down grade back to the car or maybe after landing something big enough to make my hands shake. That's about it.

Yeah, I'm the same in terms of drinking but that first beer after fishing sure does taste good , in terms of the 2nd paragraph I'm the opposite, just bought a new vest to carry even more stuff I'll most likely never need

Same here: not really taking beer on walk & wade fishing. On occasion, I'll bring a beer for the hike back out, but by then it's often warm and shaken so why not leave it at the car.

Boat fishing? Stillwater where I know I'm mostly wading in a limited area? Airbnb right on a nice pool on a river? Giddyup.

Dear hooker-of-men,

I'm not sure motorboats can even operate without a full beer cooler in them. 😉
