Today, I went into the Orvis store in Haverford, just to pick up some split shot. It's only ten mins from my home. Anyway, as I'm looking at their selection, an employee comes over and asks if he can help me. I said "I'm just looking for some spit shot, but I'd rather not spend $15 on it". The fellow says "this is a fly shop and we sell non-toxic split shot". I felt like saying, "oh, this is a fly shop?" I thanked him for his time and I left.

This is a store where I've probably spent no less than $1000 on various items over the years it's been there. Waders and wading boots account for the bulk of my spending there. But, I don't need an employee reminding me what type of store I'm in. I've been going there for a long while, and this may have been a new employee who doesn't know any better. Either way, I didn't care for the comment, so I won't be shopping there again.
I continued up the road to the Bryn Mawr TCO, where I got the split shot I wanted for $5, and I had a pleasant conversation about Valley Creek with one of the employees. Anyone else get rubbed the wrong way at an Orvis museum, I mean store?

I think you overreacted; that said, I much prefer TCO- they have a way better selection, especially on tying materials.

Edit: I'll just add that if it's the Orvis employee I'm thinking about (skinny, middle aged guy), he's definiutely a bit of an oddball and can be off-putting.

Dear wildtrout2,

Sorry you had a bad day, maybe the guy was just trying to prep flatlanders for their trip to God's Country over the 4th of July? ;)

I can't say that I have ever shopped in a store that was wholly owned by Orvis. I have Orvis products, including rods and reels but they were all purchased at independent shops that carried Orvis products as one of several brands. Flyfisher's Paradise in State College was one of the places I bought Orvis rods and reels and waders and there were others like them where I shopped over the years. Opting for variety has always been the way I like to shop.

Regards,

Tim Murphy :)

It could well be, your description is pretty accurate.

That's what triggered you? Dude, grab a beer, sit on the back porch, listen to the cicadas... and relax.

Many shops seem to have that guy who can’t wait to tell you what you need rather than what your asking for. It’s gotten to the point where 90% of my shopping these days comes from on-line stores. Maybe just my patience level waning as I get older who knows!

man .... we cant get along with Phil with his dyed jet black toupee and his knock off tippet material in God's Country .... we cant get along with Orvis guy in skinny jeans with flannel shirt with sleeves rolled up who tracks us down like a heat seeking Patriot missile as soon as we walk past the Barbour and Le Chameau welly boot displays in Haverford ... whats next? One of us "drops the gloves" with the Amish girl who's resupplying the fried chicken & meat loaf bins
at the Burkholder's Steam Table in Millhiem??

What's wrong with all of us??

It does kinda seem like the least common denominator is us. Maybe FFers are the jags?

Dear Swattie,

Maybe we are? Afterall, we drive 400 or 500 miles a weekend to fish when we clearly don't understand the impacts of lead split shot on our long wasteful drives. ;)

He should have gone to Dick's Sporting Goods and bought Water Gremlin split shot like I do, when I forget to order 2 pounds worth from Fish USA. They are from PA so it's almost like buying from a shop!

It's getting hot around here! ;)

Regards,

Tim Murphy :)

I'm a fan of water gremlin and basic Eagle Claw BB sized shot. It's about all I need. I'm usually employing shot on bigger creeks in faster water where the shot isn't going to spook fish. Sometimes, on a small water, there may be a need for "micro-shot," but those times are few and far between and a weighted nymph can usually get the job done.

I like lead shot. I doubt shot used in most streams across the state has any impact at all on the environment.

Blue Rock Sportsman Club lies out in New Lancaster Valley in Miff Co on the banks of Honey Creek before it sinks. They have a damned good sporting clays range, and they also do a lot of trap shooting. I used to shoot the sporting clays every weekend. The abundance of lead shot there from shotguns is probably a bad thing. I mean, it's clearly killing trees, changing the environment, etc. Dang, shotguns are fun!
