I will probably make my first ever brook trout trip to the Catskills soon. this is just a general question I'd like to find my own small streams using maps... anyone know whether brookies are relatively common in small catskills streams just above the NE corner of pa? for example I think brookies are pretty common in the Poconos an North Central PA is it about like that up there? def higher elevations not far from the border... thanks

Dear k-bob,

Brook trout are very common in all the small streams in Delaware County NY that I ever bothered to wet a line in.

Regards,

Tim Murphy :)

If you get up another 15 minutes into the Catskill park, I'm pretty sure they are in most creeks, beaver dams and ponds. You should be able to access NY DEC map that show streams.

thanks guys, that's the kind of info I was looking for...

Post some photos of your trip. If you get up into the park, you can find some pretty remote / beautiful spots.

thanks I will do that I am surprised at the drive from Philly its not as bad as I thought... I often fish after three or three and a half hours on the road, why not? not far from the border there are some 3500 foot mountains much bigger than the poconos, I am going to be careful out there...

Some of the Beaverkill headwater stream have brookies, and they do get down to the Bkill and the East Branch of the Delaware.

Go up above the reservoirs and try any small creek. If you get into browns, go further upstream. The area is loaded with brook trout.

thanks yeah this sounds good. have some good maps and will just try some likely looking small streams.

like to find streams -- will study sat maps, have paper maps, use gps w/topo & backcountry navigator phone app, see geotagged stream photos on google earth, check geocaching sites, check water temps at road crossings... works in PA, why not up there? plenty of public catskills streams look good.

OK, as requested, here are a few catskills stream snaps, fine scenery and fishing... also nice cool water temps. Delaware/ulster county NY. I will be sure to put some more miles on the NY fishing license. thanks

You can't tease like that. Where's the fish porn? I'll also guess the you didn't see another angler.

there were brookies but I just let 'em go asap. only saw campers.
