Due to the recent passing of former President Carter I came across this book. I'm only a few dozen page into it but it is well written and Mr. Carter sounds like a very down to earth person. I think we're all aware of his relationship with George Harvey and Spruce creek but the tales from his youth are a bit different than what I would have expected.
I think, so far, it is an interesting view of his outdoor experiences. I put aside my preconceived ideas and am enjoying this book so far.

I'll look for this book, I was a teen when Carter was elected and in my early 20's when he left office. I've always said we need to wait 25-30 years before we judge any President. And Holy Cow, if he was a fisherman, I'm willing to be open minded.

My parents got me this book when I was in my late teens I think. Unfortunately I can’t find it. I really enjoyed it.

I read several of his books including this one and enjoyed them all. Good guy. I doubt we will see another guy like him in office anytime soon.

I corresponded with him a few times over the years.

Once letter was just about fishing after he was out of office. The other was a request for help years later when the Home Depot project on the banks of the Letort was looming.

He responded both times and he got involved with the Home Depot project...

Despite never voting for him and keeping politics out of the discussion, he was a good guy, at least to me.

Unfortunately this thread will probably get political, ugly and locked but thanks!

That's awesome. Yeah he seems like the kind of guy who would respond. Really down to earth. I remember seeing him on TV visiting TMI after the disaster there in "79.

I got the book through my local library. Not only was he a fisherman but he hunted a variety of game and talks about eating racoon and 'possum with his neighboring families, black and white.

You know I was thinking he seemed like the kind of person who would respond to the average citizen's letter. A wasted and unrecognized opportunity on my part.

The funny part of the story is in the first letter I recounted a day fishing on the Little Lehigh when I caught a bunch of fish.

In his reply he stated in part, "You must be a skilled fisherman, and one I am proud to know."

I guess if I was an "honest" fisherman & told him I was fishing at the "Kiddie Pool" and probably using pellet flies he might not have had as much praise for my abilities. 😉

I reckon he spent enough time on the Harpster stretch of Spruce to know a thing or two about pellet heads.
